Which Toothpaste Should We Use?

One of the most frequently asked questions by our patients is which toothpaste do you recommend? income. Actually, my answer is usually the same: Use FLUORIZED toothpaste.

In this article, I would like to diversify our recommendations on the use of toothpaste and talk about the differences you should pay attention to when choosing a toothpaste.

As a dentist, the pastes we recommend for children and adults have certain features; It contains sufficient amount of fluoride, does not contain abrasive particles, foams as little as possible and is FDI (World Dental Association) approved.

Let's express these features a little more clearly:

. Toothpaste Must Contain Sufficient Fluoride: Fluoride toothpaste can be used for children starting from 6 months. Toothpastes containing 500 ppm fluoride should be preferred for ages 6 months to 2 years. Choose pastes containing 1000 ppm fluoride for ages 2-6 and 1450 ppm for children and adults over 6 years old.

Why are there different fluoride contents? Because toothpaste must contain enough fluoride to prevent tooth decay, but also in an amount that is harmless to children. For this reason, there are toothpastes containing different amounts of fluoride for different age groups.

. It Should Not Contain Abrasive Particles: Toothpastes, especially those that promise whitening, contain abrasive particles. However, although the abrasions on our teeth provide a whiter appearance at first, in the long run it causes more staining due to tea, coffee and coloring foods settling in the gaps formed due to wear on the teeth. Since it can cause serious sensitivity problems, if you want to buy products that say whitening when choosing a toothpaste, make sure that it says "DOES NOT CONTAIN CORROSIVES". If you want your teeth to be whiter, please share this with your dentist. Nowadays, teeth whitening methods that do not cause tooth sensitivity are applied.

. Why Should Toothpaste Be Low Foaming? Too much foaming of toothpastes reduces their cleaning properties, so I recommend you to choose low-foaming pastes.

. female Does Your Paste Require Approval? There are various institutions where products are approved (by the Ministry of Health in our country) to prove that all products and foods produced are not harmful to consumers. FDI (World Dental Association) is an institution that requires approval of toothpaste, and if the toothpaste you use is not FDI approved, it is not possible to check whether its content is harmful. This is why we cannot use every paste that claims to have organic ingredients. Remember that containing fluoride does not make the paste harmful. On the contrary, a fluoride-free toothpaste will NOT protect you against tooth decay.

So which paste do we recommend? Please note that our recommendations on this subject are independent of brands. In recent years, anti-cavity ingredients have diversified, so our recommendations have also increased. For example, xylitol is an anti-cavity sugar alcohol and is used especially in chewing gums. It is now possible to see xylitol pastes in markets. However, if you pay attention, many xylitol pastes do not contain fluoride, so your choice should be fluoride first. Additionally, current studies show that the anti-caries effect of arginine and fluoride increases. Arginine, which has many benefits for general health, has also begun to be used in toothpastes. Therefore, using pastes containing fluoride and arginine strengthens our hand in our fight against caries. You can also find these pastes in our country.
