The beginning time of normal birth is considered to be the period when the cervix begins to open and labor pains occur regularly. On average, the expectant mother experiences pain every 5 or 10 minutes. When contractions begin, the cervix has not yet opened. For mothers who will give birth for the first time after active labor begins, the uterus opens at a rate of 1 centimeter per hour. The cervix can dilate up to 10 centimeters during this period. After the cervix opens, the second stage of labor begins. This stage is the stage when the baby is born. The mother begins to push and birth takes place within half an hour to an hour. The birth of the baby and the separation of the placenta are considered the third stage. The third stage is completed when the baby separates from the placenta.
Factors affecting the birth time:
The birth time of mothers with their first birth is longer. As the number of births increases, this period becomes shorter. While the mother's first birth is completed in an average of 10 hours, the birth of the second or third pregnancy is completed in an average of 5 to 7 hours. If there is a problem with the pregnancy, if there are problems with the baby or the placenta, if the method of birth needs to be changed or urgent surgical intervention is required, the birth time may be extended.
How long does a normal birth take?
How long does a normal birth take?
strong>If the expectant mother is going to give birth to her first child, normal birth may take approximately 10 to 15 hours. If the mother is going to give birth to her second child, this period lasts between 6 and 8 hours. If the mother will give birth to her third or fourth child, this period will be even shorter.
First stage of normal birth:
First stage: is the stage when the pains begin. False contractions are pains experienced before real pains that help the mother get used to birth. False labor pains are pains that do not increase in intensity and are relieved by changing positions. However, real labor pains do not go away when the mother rests, lies down or stands up. Real labor pains are felt by the mother every 5 or 10 minutes. Additionally, the mother's cervix will dilate for birth every 1 hour. The duration of the opening of the cervix along with the pains is the first pregnancy of the expectant mother. It is completed in an average of 10 to 12 hours. This period is shorter for the mother's second or third child.
Second phase of normal birth
After the first phase of normal birth is completed, the second phase, the mother's pushing phase, begins. This phase begins after the cervix dilates to 10 cm. If the mother is giving birth to her first baby, pushing takes about 50 minutes. If the mother is going to give birth to her second or third child, this period is shortened.
Third stage of normal birth
The third stage of normal birth is when the baby comes out of the mother's womb and the placenta is present. This is the phase when it is eliminated from the body. The third stage of labor lasts between 5 and 20 minutes. After this stage of birth is completed, final checks are made to the mother. During these checks, it is checked whether the mother has any bleeding or tears. If an episiotomy, that is, a birth incision, has been performed, the mother is given stitches. The sewing process takes approximately 20 minutes. After all these procedures, the mother is taken from the delivery table and taken to her room with her baby.
