Self Compassion

Self-compassion is a concept conceptualized by Psychologist Kristin Neff, which defines a positive and healthy relationship with oneself. If we are to define self-compassion in detail, when people have a hard time, experience an unpleasant event, fail, that is, when they feel that they are inadequate and unsatisfactory in some matters, they do this with a kind, understanding and accepting structure instead of judging themselves and treating themselves badly. their reception. Self-compassion is actually no different than feeling compassion for someone else, you can become at peace with yourself in your inner world by turning your compassion and goodwill towards yourself. In life there are always mistakes, sad situations, failures, etc. situations will come true, if you open yourself to this reality instead of escaping it, your life experience will also go in a good direction.

Kristin Neff says that self-compassion exists with three components and these three basic components are as follows;

1 . Self-kindness: Self-compassion requires that we face painful or hopeless situations in a warm and understanding way instead of hurting ourselves and judging ourselves. Emotional calm will increase when we accept the bad and painful situations that can always happen with kindness and sympathy.

2. Common sense of humanity: When people suffer a situation, they may tend to think that it is only themselves who experience similar situations. Self-compassion includes accepting that everyone can make mistakes, be inadequate, and suffer, rather than isolating ourselves from humanity, this is a human experience.

3. Conscious awareness: Self-compassion requires a balanced approach to our negative emotions. With this approach, emotions are neither completely suppressed nor exaggerated too much. This balancing process occurs with the need to relate our own experience to the experience of others, and therefore we see our own situation from a broad perspective. At this stage, awareness means not overly identifying with one's thoughts and feelings by observing them without suppressing or denying them.

These three basic components will really help us in creating or maintaining a happy environment, but when we start to practice self-compassion, a conscious effort will be required because most of our mental activities are instinctive and some of them are consciously conscious while gaining a new experience. It may take some effort.

 So, what are the techniques we can use when starting to practice self-compassion?

• Treat yourself as if you were treating a friend, thinking about how you would treat others can guide you in which way you would treat yourself.

• Be aware of yourself, acting by being aware of our inner narratives and inner conversations can be a positive way to start.

• Accept yourself, this is your embracing your shortcomings and strengths.

• Look from a broad perspective, this view can help you remember that you are a part of humanity and adjust your focus accordingly.

Self-compassion can offer a more positive perspective on life and our lives in situations such as when we humiliate ourselves, suffer, or fail in many parts of our lives. Incorporating this concept into our lives will help us to establish our relations with ourselves and other people on a healthier ground.
