APPLICATION OF GASTROSTOMY TUBE IN NUTRITION OF CEREBRAL PALSY PATIENTS

I CAN NOW FEED WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM

Cerebral palsy (cerebral palsy)is a disease characterized by permanent damage to the brain, seen in 2-3 children in every 1000 live births. The cause may be due to many reasons during the womb, at birth and after birth. In the early years, it may show symptoms such as retardation in sitting, walking and speaking, as well as the development of hand preference before the age of two, crying for meaningless nights, not being able to swallow saliva, refusing to eat, sticking out its tongue, and not being able to hold its neck. In the subtype of cerebral palsy, which we call spastic, intense stiffness in the arms and legs and movement limitations may occur at different levels from patient to patient. Physical therapy is recommended for almost all patients.

85-90% of patients with cerebral palsy have nutritional problems at various levels. Especially in children with severe cerebral palsy, eating, chewing and swallowing problems due to convulsions often occur. It takes these children 2-5 hours to eat their meals and they do not get enough calories. They are getting weaker. They often leak their own saliva and the food they eat into their lungs and are condemned to live in intensive care units all the time.

The gastrostomy tube application, which we call PEG, is easily inserted by pediatric surgeons or pediatric gastroenterologists in a 15-minute application. This application can be applied to children very easily. If there is a problem after insertion or if it needs to be removed, it can be removed with a 5-minute intervention. The wound can heal on its own, permanently, one week after it is closed.

PEGIt is a 15-centimeter tube. One end of this tube is in the stomach and the other end is outside. There is a closing latch on the outside. When we give food, this latch can be opened and all liquid foods can be given with the syringe. After the gastrostomy tube application, the patient can also be given food orally. All foods and medications that can pass through the tube can be given easily this way. Thanks to this process, your child can easily eat every meal and gain weight quickly and become beautiful. A child who gains weight increases his/her resistance and becomes less sick. Hospital The frequency of hospitalization decreases. Both mother and child are happy. Believe me, families who have problems with oral eating and who have this procedure done are very upset later because they did not have it done early and were hesitant.
