What is Osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma (osteogenic sarcoma) is the most common malignant bone tumor in children and adolescents. It is known that the patient has gene abnormalities in osteosarcoma. The most common abnormalities in these patients are chromosomes 13 and 17.

What are the symptoms of osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma is most common in the lower end of the femur and the upper end of the tibia, and is most often seen in the long bones. Pain is the main finding in most of the patients.
There is a palpable mass in half of the cases. Restriction of movement and weakness in the extremities (limbs) may be seen in the affected area.
Tumour metastases (spread) are seen at a rate of 15% and often spread to the lungs, other bones and brain.

What are the radiographic and laboratory findings?

In 50% of the patients, serum alkaline phosphate and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) are high in 25%.
Direct radiography makes the diagnosis. (In the radiographic image, there is a lytic and sclerotic lesion with bone formation and destruction together)

Osteosarcoma treatment

Osteosarcoma treatment is performed according to the stage of the tumor. Today, the treatment is preoperative chemotherapy, wide resection (of the tumor) It progresses in the form of chemotherapy after resection and resection. Response to radiotherapy (radiation therapy) is low.
