Teaching Children Habits

What should be the steps taken in the process of forming a habit?

Habit formation in children is based on imitation. The most important imitation figures for the child are the parents. For this reason, parents' behaviors are the ones most imitated by the child. It is normal for children to become habits of their parents' frequent behaviors.

The most important way to gain habits is for these habits to be made and maintained by parents. Another important issue is that the child has the ability to make these habits. In addition, the benefits of these habits to the child and the beauty they will add to his life should be explained in a way that the child can understand. In addition, these habits must have taken place in that society and culture. Otherwise, after a while, children may begin to question these habits and produce alternatives.

What to do with a child who does not read books? It starts with reading stories from an early age, then continues with children learning objects and concepts from picture story books, and ends with children using books as a source of information after learning to read. There should never be any compulsion to read books. It should be ensured that books are read regularly and on subjects that the child likes. It may be beneficial for parents to arrange a time to read books with their children. Also, having a library or book cabinet at home may encourage children to read books. After reading the book, children are questioned about what they learned from the book and how they can reflect this in their lives. Additionally, children are rewarded with things they love for reading books. However, if some children do not like reading and have difficulty reading, these children may have reading difficulties (dyslexia). Reading difficulties are a disorder in which the child generally has a slow reading speed, confuses letters, and makes up or swallows some of the words, even though he has completed his reading education. Although there is no problem in the intelligence of these children, there are problems in their learning styles and memory skills. The brains of these children process visual and auditory data differently. Learning is also different because it encodes . Again, children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder often have difficulty acquiring the habit of reading because they get bored easily and have concentration problems. Reading books should be kept separate from studying. Because studying is considered a responsibility and a duty, and reading books is considered a hobby or activity. In addition, while studying is necessary at certain periods of life, books are useful and necessary throughout life.
