Dependent Personality Disorder

This disorder is a personality disorder consistent with being submissive, difficulty making decisions, and not being autonomous. Individuals with dependent personality disorder are extremely possessive towards someone and have a fear of separation from them.

Characteristics of Dependent Personality Disorder

· The state of being excessively dependent on others

· Lack of self-confidence

· Difficulty in deciding and doing a job alone

·         Inability to accomplish a situation without others

·         Fear of being alone

·         Accepting any situation in order not to break away from the person they are addicted to

·         Difficulty in saying no

·         Sensitivity to abandonment and rejection

·         Sensitivity to rejection in partner relationships, and immediately seeking a new relationship in case their relationship ends

·         Predisposition to substance abuse

·         Sensitivity to criticism

·         Those around them make decisions in their lives

 

According to DSM-IV Diagnostic Criteria, five or more of the following situations may indicate dependent personality disorder; has difficulty making daily decisions.

·         He needs others to take responsibility in most important areas of his life.

·         The person has difficulty in telling others that he does not share the same opinion for fear of losing support or not being accepted.

·         The person has difficulty initiating plans or doing things on his own.

·         The person goes to the extreme of wanting to do unpleasant things to obtain the care and support of others.

·         The person feels uncomfortable and helpless when left alone because of his/her excessive odor, as he/she thinks that he cannot take care of himself.

· & nbsp; When a dominant relationship ends, the person immediately seeks another relationship as a source of care and support.

·         The person unrealistically ruminates on fears of being left to fend for himself/herself.

What are the Causes of Dependent Personality Disorder?

Ø  Behaviors that prevent the child from being autonomous

Ø  Lack of love in childhood

What is the Treatment of Dependent Personality Disorder?

Since it will not be easy for the individual to quickly change these behaviors that he has been maintaining for years, the treatment process It may take a long time. It is very important for the individual to be willing to receive treatment and accept this process.
