Although the definition and function of the family varies in different periods and cultures, when we consider it within the scope of family therapy, “family; It is defined as a complex structure consisting of individuals who share a history, have emotional ties, and plan strategies to meet the needs of individual family members and the family as a whole (Sabatelli and Bartle, 1995; cited in Nazlı, 2000, p. 15). In family therapy, we also work with this structure and try to simplify the components of the complex structure. Family functions, that is, family members have duties and responsibilities, and when there is a problem with this functionality, family therapy is needed. We classify the family in two ways: traditional (extended) family and nuclear family. This makes it easier to understand family dynamics. Communication within the family is another important issue. Communication within the family; It is the interaction between family members. Our communication tools are; empathy and active listening. If there is a communication problem within the family, all family members are affected. If we think of it as water in a bowl; Fish will be affected by the problem in this water in proportion to their own endurance.
Main approaches and aims in family therapies; These include increasing verbal communication between family members that leads to harmony, increasing or facilitating emotional communication, restoring the balance of power in the family, helping families adapt to their new roles, solving acute problems, and preventing crimes against a selected individual. One of the aims of therapy is to ensure that individuals show harmony between their emotions and actions and to help individuals accept their responsibilities.
Healthy families are needed to raise healthy children. The behavior of the mother and father lies at the basis of intelligence and personality development. Some children; In their older years, they behave just like their parents, but some children are so forced that they choose to act the opposite. However, the important thing is to help the child through a conscious interpretation of the behavior of his/her parents and to acquire the correct behavior, and this is related to the parental attitude. We can get the support we need to raise a mentally healthy child.
