Depressed people make some cognitive distortions frequently, these distortions lead the person to more negative thinking, self-confidence and depression. These distortions;
- All or nothing thinking: The typical mindset of people who think this way is as follows; “Finish a job perfectly or don't start it at all.” Some people want a task to be perfect so much that they eventually give up on it.
- Personalization: An employee says his harsh tone stemming from tensions at work says, “They don't want me here, they don't bother me to quit. they might think. The person considers the events that they have nothing to do with him as if they are completely related to his person and holds himself responsible for the negative consequences of these events. A meticulous man, not seeing that his wife is good-natured and loving, complains about unpressed trousers. A person who always sees the glass half empty cannot be happy. For example, a depressed college student hears his best friend being teased and gets angry; because his thought is “All people are cruel and insensitive”. In fact, only a few people have been cruel to him recently.
- Overriding the positive: Some depressed people always turn positive experiences into negative ones. Positive events are not only ignored but can be turned into nightmares with a clever and quick maneuver.
- Mind reading: For example, a friend passes by you while walking on the street and does not say “Hello”; Because he's deep in thought, he doesn't even notice you. You had the wrong thought and thought, “He is ignoring me, maybe he doesn't love me anymore.” This means that you have unconsciously read the other party's mind.
