CHILDHOOD FEARS

Fear is the feeling of anxiety created by a real danger situation or the possibility of danger in a person. This situation occurs more often in childhood. Childhood fears appear in a wide variety of ways. These fears vary depending on the age of the child. The causes of fear seen in children may arise from daily events or from non-existent dangers in their imagination.

The most common fears in childhood are; fear of sleeping alone, fear of darkness, fear of separation and fear of death.

The most common fear of preschool children is the fear of sleeping alone. A child who gets used to sleeping next to his parents from an early age may have difficulty sleeping alone. The fear of going to bed may also be due to fears about death or sleep. The reason must be determined well. It is necessary to establish a regular schedule for the child's bedtime. It is necessary to ensure that the child is calm 1 hour before going to sleep, stay next to the child until he falls asleep, and not rush to leave the child before going to sleep.

The fear of sleeping alone in children may also be due to the fear of the dark. It is normal for children to feel lonely in the dark. In such a case, keeping a night light in the child's room will help.

In the case of separation fear, if the mother feels anxious when leaving the child and enters the child's room with anxiety, the child will also think that separation from the mother is something to be afraid of.

Fear of death is among the topics that 3-6 year old children wonder and fear. The most fearful thing here is the feeling that the mother will die or abandon the child. It is necessary to explain to the child in a nice way about death that everyone will die one day and that this is the end of life.

In order to cope with the child's fears, the reasons for the fear should be investigated and these reasons should be tried to be eliminated. Children's fears should not be mocked and the child should be listened to. Children should not be allowed to watch horror movies or be told scary fairy tales. It should not be forgotten that fear should not be used as a tool of discipline.
