Abortion (Termination of Pregnancy)

Terminating an unwanted pregnancy by medical methods is called abortion (Medical term: Curettage) .

According to the laws of the Republic of Turkey, the person who will have the abortion must be over 18 years old and the gestational age is less than 10 weeks. should be small. If the person is married, his/her spouse's consent is required. For those who are not married, the person's own consent is sufficient.

Abortion is performed only by a Gynecologist-Obstetrician in a health institution or clinic. During the abortion procedure, attention should be paid to confidentiality and private sharing between the patient and the physician.

The risks of abortion increase as the pregnancy progresses. The legal limit of 10 weeks has been determined in this way, taking into account the health of the person. Therefore, the decision to have an abortion must be made before 10 weeks.

In cases where it is confirmed by examinations that the baby is disabled and the continuation of the pregnancy threatens the health of the mother, the pregnancy can be terminated with the decision of the board and the consent of the parents, even if the pregnancy is longer than 10 weeks.

Abortion is performed with the vacuum technique (in the form of drawing with negative pressure into the syringe).

Termination of pregnancy with medication:

The drug used for this purpose is not yet available in our country (preparation name: RU-486). On the other hand, in our country, drugs whose active ingredient is progesterone, erroneously called expectorants, are widely used by the public to induce miscarriage. It should be known that while this group of drugs is ineffective in terminating pregnancy, on the contrary, it has the feature of supporting pregnancy.

How is Abortion (Termination of Pregnancy) performed?

1- Before the procedure, the patient is examined with ultrasound. The gestational sac must be detected on ultrasound. Intervention performed before the gestational sac is seen may harm the patient. (The patient may not be pregnant, there may be an ectopic pregnancy or it may be a very early stage of pregnancy).

2- The procedure is performed under anesthesia. Anesthesia performed in the doctor's office is an anesthesia that can be applied safely under office conditions. In fact, it is a type of sedation rather than anesthesia. Sedation is applied with appropriate medications prescribed by the Anesthesiologist and does not cause any risks or side effects. Both are out of the question. The patient does not feel anything during the procedure. He does not remember anything about the transaction afterwards. Local anesthesia can be applied to women who have previously given birth normally. However, considering the psychological trauma of the procedure, general anesthesia is more preferred. In our center, the patient is kept under control by the anesthesiologist throughout the procedure and until half an hour after the procedure.

3- The patient should not eat or drink anything for 6-8 hours before the procedure.

4- After the patient is prepared on the gynecology table, the anesthesiologist gives the necessary medications and puts him to sleep.

5- A speculum is placed in the vagina. After the vagina and cervix are cleaned with medication, the cervix is dilated with special tools. The inside of the uterus is evacuated with a plastic cannula and the vacuum device attached to it. The procedure is terminated after bleeding control. In our center, after checking the patient with ultrasound and making sure that there is no problem, the patient is woken up.

6- The patient is rested in the rest room for half an hour.

7 -After the procedure (when the rest period is over), the patient can eat and drink whatever he wants. For that day, one should stay away from activities that require attention (for example, driving) and alcoholic beverages.

8- If no infection is detected during the procedure, antibiotic treatment is required. There is no. A prescription for painkillers is given.

9- After the procedure, there may be bleeding of 1-2 pads a day for up to a few days (it may also be in the form of small pieces). You should not go to the sea or the pool on the days when bleeding occurs, and if you have to take a bath, it should be done as a standing shower.

10- If there is severe pain, fever, or excessive bleeding in the days after the procedure, a physician should be consulted.

11- Sexual intercourse should be avoided for two weeks after the procedure (pain and infection may be triggered).

12- The first menstrual period after abortion may be irregular. It may occur in any period between 20 and 40 days.

Things to know

Rarely, the gestational sac is very small and (pregnancies less than 5 weeks) kurta Pregnancy may continue despite pregnancy. In order to avoid this dangerous situation, the best thing to do is to see the gestational sac with ultrasound and perform the abortion at the time recommended by the doctor.

There is a belief among the public that the first abortion is dangerous and pregnancy will not occur again. As long as the abortion procedure is performed under appropriate conditions and by a specialist, there are almost no complications. However, it should not be forgotten that abortion is not a birth control method. Whenever possible, spouses should be careful to protect themselves and have children whenever they want.
