HALITOSIS (Bad Odor)
Halitosis (bad breath)is defined as the condition of bad odor coming out of the mouth through breathing
Bad breath can be caused by many different reasons. The most common of these originates from the intraoral tissues with a rate of 85%. The remaining approximately 15% of bad breath complaints are due to non-oral causes.
Oral halitosis, especially volatile sulfur, which is released when anaerobic bacteria decompose organic substrates.
Bad breath originating from intraoral tissues:
The main oral causes of halitosis are periodontitis, gingivitis, aphthous sores, dental abscesses, oral ulcers, Herpetic infections, candidiasis (fungal infection), oral cancers, xerestomia (dry mouth) and poor oral hygiene, resulting in the dorsal part of the tongue being covered with plaque.
Treatment is not complicated. It is easily diagnosed by the dentist as a result of intraoral examination.
TREATMENT METHODS
About 8 out of every 10 patients complain of bad breath. The problem of grains originates from the tissues inside the mouth. Among these, the largest proportion is due to the tongue not being cleaned sufficiently. Regarding oral complaints, which are the subject of dentistry;
A-If there is dry mouth, it is useful to drink plenty of water. In dry mouth, the patient needs to pay more attention to maintaining oral hygiene because saliva cannot wash the mouth sufficiently. Sugarless gum both stimulates saliva secretion and cleans the teeth mechanically.
B-All restorations in the mouth are checked. Fillings with overhanging edges and poor fit of dentures in the mouth can be easily diagnosed by the dentist. For treatment, bad restorations in the mouth are replaced. Gums are examined and evaluated for tartar and gum diseases. Dental tartar cleaning and gum diseases are treated. Gum pockets and periodontal disorders should be treated.
The patient's mouth is examined. Hygiene training is given.
If there are missing teeth, more tartar accumulates because the patient uses this side less. An implant or a bridge prosthesis is made to replace these missing teeth. Bruises are treated. Particularly semi-buried teeth may require extraction as they may cause hidden pockets.
