*What is circumcision?

The surgical removal of the skin (preputum) covering the end of the child's sexual organ is called "circumcision". Circumcision is a serious surgical procedure. It is performed in circumcision. There are several methods. The main purpose of circumcision is to surgically remove the foreskin covering the tip of the penis.

*At what age should circumcision be performed?

Circumcision can technically be performed at any age, but we do not recommend circumcision between the ages of 2-5. Children's development should be evaluated not only physically but also psychologically. It is not recommended to be circumcised between the ages of 2 and 5, which is the period when a child's sexual identity develops and consciousness is just beginning to develop. The operation performed during this period may cause trauma to the child and psychological development may be negatively affected.

*How is circumcision performed? (local and general)

Circumcision should be performed in a hospital in a sterile environment and with equipment. Circumcision surgery performed outside the neonatal period and the first 3 months is more appropriate to be performed under general anesthesia. After anesthesia is achieved, the surgical area is cleaned and sterilized. The skin fold is cut and removed. After bleeding is controlled in the surgery area, the skin is stitched in accordance with the new anatomy. Since the stitches are self-dissolving, it is not necessary to remove the stitches after the circumcision operation.

*What should be taken into consideration after circumcision?

It is normal to have redness and edema (swelling) after circumcision. Bleeding may occur due to trauma to the penis after circumcision. In case of persistent bleeding, problems urinating, or foul-smelling discharge, a doctor should be taken for a check-up. A fever exceeding 37.5 C is not expected after circumcision, and if this situation occurs, a doctor should be checked. .Performing circumcision under the most ideal conditions for the child is very important in terms of preventing problems that may occur in the future.

*What are the situations in which circumcision should not be performed?

 &nbs p;In children with circumcision (hypospadias), the urinary hole is not where it should be. Foreskin is used to correct this situation. For this reason, circumcision is not recommended at first. Patients with hemophilia and other blood clotting disorders and those who are prone to bleeding should not be circumcised without taking the necessary examinations and precautions. For those with congenital (hereditary) diseases related to the reproductive and urinary tract, priority should be given to anatomically corrective surgeries.

*Is there pain during and after the circumcision procedure?

 Since local anesthesia is used during the circumcision procedure, there is no pain. Afterwards, pain may occur within 24 hours, pain is controlled with painkillers. .

*What consequences does incorrect circumcision have?

Aesthetic mistakes can be seen in circumcisions performed by people other than surgeons, such as barbers and circumcisers; Injuries may occur on the body and/or head of the penis. However, correcting urinary tract injuries, penis body and glans injuries may require a chain of serious surgeries. Sometimes it may not be possible to correct it, organ loss may occur.

*What should families who want to have their children circumcised pay attention to?

Immediately after circumcision, pain and penis pain occur in the first 2 days. Redness and swelling (edema) may occur at the tip. Fast recovery is achieved with painkillers and not keeping the child standing for a long time. You can take a bath after two days. In some circumcision cases, slight postoperative bleeding may occur. In such cases, the physician should be informed. Slight swelling at the tip of the penis is an expected condition and it will regain its normal appearance in approximately 2 weeks.
