Labyrinthitis is the name given to the inflammation of the inner ear organs related to both balance and hearing. It may occur following an upper respiratory tract infection, as in balance nerve inflammation (vestibular neuritis). One or both inner ears may be affected by the disease. It may occur due to viral or bacterial infections or systemic diseases. It can be seen most frequently in adults between the ages of 30 and 70. In adults, the source of infection is often a chronic (chronic) middle ear infection that has been causing discomfort for a long time. In children, it is usually under the age of 2 and can be seen together with meningitis. Therefore, involvement of both inner ears is much more common in childhood. The feeling of imbalance is always accompanied by hearing loss. The onset of vertigo is sudden. It is seen together with middle ear infection or meningitis, depending on whether it originates from the ear or brain membranes. Careful and prompt medical and, if necessary, surgical treatment is a necessity.
