Standard Precautions in Dentistry Practices Related to Covid-19

New coronavirus infection-2019 (COVID-19) is thought to be transmitted through respiratory secretions, like other coronavirus infections. Respiratory secretion droplets containing the virus, which are released from sick people into the environment during coughing, sneezing, laughing and talking, come into contact with the mucosa of healthy people and cause these people to become ill. Close contact (closer than 1-1.5 meters) is required for the disease to be transmitted from person to person in this way. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, respiratory droplets enter the mouth or can be inhaled into the noses of nearby people and possibly into the lungs.

At this point, both patients and physicians must fulfill some responsibilities. It is recommended that the patient with any symptoms go to the nearest health institution first. Patients applying to clinics for treatment should come alone, without a companion, as much as possible, comply with the measures applied in the clinics such as temperature measurement and use of disinfectant, and care should be taken to wear the mask while waiting for treatment. Such as coughing and sneezing. In such cases, the mouth should be covered with a tissue or sleeve, and should never be covered with bare hands. Before starting the treatment, hands should be washed and gargled with water containing antiseptics. Physicians should wash their hands before putting on gloves and after removing them. At the same time, they must protect both the patient and themselves by wearing a visor during treatment. In some treatment applications, it is also recommended to wear overalls or aprons. All equipment should be removed before leaving the clinic and disposable equipment should be discarded, other equipment should be sterilized and disinfected. After the treatment, the clinic should be ventilated and the entire environment should be disinfected with disinfectants. The clinic should be made ready for reuse by allowing time between patients.

These rules should be followed. Being careful is the responsibility of both physicians and patients during the pandemic process. Complying with these rules will strengthen our hand in reaching a more comfortable environment and will bring those days closer to us. Thank you for reading, we wish you healthy days.
