Did you know that one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year? That more than 850 million toothbrushes end up in landfills every year? There are nine million tonnes of plastic waste falling into the ocean every year! Although it is not possible to completely eliminate plastics from our lives, we can individually reduce their production and replace them with alternatives.
Numerous studies have shown that plastics in general and microplastics in particular are harmful to marine and freshwater systems, soil, water column and all environmental factors, including surface layers. *.

As a dentist, I researched alternative toothbrushes and pastes that will protect your oral and dental health and will not harm the environment.
I discovered that there are toothbrushes that are made of bamboo and are biodegradable. Models prepared by adhering to the basic features sought in manual toothbrushes can be preferred. After trying various bamboo toothbrushes, I looked into a more biodegradable floss option. Again, you can choose a dental floss that meets the basic criteria of thinness and shape.
As for toothpastes; Even though these are not made of plastic, they may contain a certain amount of microplastic*. It is especially necessary to be careful with those containing microparticles.
Many products that are certified organic and claim to be anti-cavities or enamel strengtheners are offered for sale. These may be preferred or used in addition to other pastes.
But it should not be forgotten that all toothpastes must contain fluoride to protect against oral diseases. The protective factor of brushing your teeth comes from the mechanical action of the brush and the remineralizing effect of fluoride. Years of research and clinical trials have shown that the use of fluoride is safe, effective, and significantly reduces your risk of developing cavities. Other ingredients, such as banana scrub, coconut oil or triclosan, may contribute protective factors, but on their own they are not enough to fight cavities.
