WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF Tear Duct Obstruction?
In cases where the eye waters more than normal, becomes swollen, and inflamed, we can assume that there is something not normal
and wrong. Normally, the fluid secreted by the tear gland is absorbed and passes into the lacrimal sac. From here it flows into the nasal cavity through the tear ducts. Tear duct obstruction is when tears do not move in their normal course and flow outward and down the cheeks. This phenomenon, which we call excessive watering, is a symptom of tear duct obstruction.
Many people think this situation is normal. However, excessive outward flow of tears disrupts the balance and system in the structure of the eye. Some of the tear fluid accumulates in the eyes, and this manifests itself as infection and crusting. Additionally, symptoms such as pain, redness and swelling are observed.
In some cases, inflammation occurs in the eye when the root of the nose is pressed. Swelling at the root of the nose is one of the symptoms of tear duct blockage.
Who gets tear duct blockage?
It is a disorder that can be seen at any age. It is more common in newborn babies and women who have gone through menopause. It can manifest itself as a congenital disorder, or it can also be caused by hormonal changes later on. Although rare, tear duct obstruction can also be seen in people in the middle age group.
What is the cause of duct obstruction?
In babies, in the womb. While the tear ducts cannot complete their formation. Failure to puncture the membrane in the area that opens to the tear sac and the nose causes this condition. Since the duct is closed, tears cannot reach the nasal cavity.
It is generally seen in middle and older ages. Infections, trauma, sinusitis or systemic inflammatory diseases, and in some cases tumors, can cause the disease.
How is it detected?
By administering fluid to the tear ducts with the help of a cannula, physicians can easily detect whether there is an obstruction. This process is called “Lavage”. During this procedure, if liquid enters the person's throat, It means there is no problem. If there is no liquid coming out, there is a problem. However, the form of the problem also needs to be determined. Two methods are generally used to detect the problem. The first of these is “dacryocystography” and the other is “dacryoscintigraphy” method.
Treatment methods
I apply a complex treatment in my clinic in Ankara. . The first method I applied was the massage method. I recommend my patients to continue their massage at home, 3-4 times a day, 10 times a day. I apply a massage from the root of the nose downwards and in the form of stroking. The possibility of opening the tear ducts with the massage method is quite high.
Op. Dr. Hakan YÜZER also uses the "Probing" method in his clinic. Probing is generally preferred for channels that cannot be opened with massage application.
Op. Dr. Hakan YÜZER has provided treatment to hundreds of patients so far with massage and probing methods.
