Are obesity surgeries really high risk?

Obesity has doubled all over the world in the last 30 years. This situation is expected to continue to increase. It has been proven that the most effective and definitive treatment of obesity is provided by surgery, there is no debate on this issue. However, people who are considering surgery due to obesity are discouraged by the concern that it is risky due to news in the media or what they hear from people around them. Is it really high risk for those who have had obesity surgeries (Sleeve Gastrectomy = Stomach Reduction Surgery, Gastric bypass surgery)?
Actually, the truth is; Every year, 2.8 million people in the world die due to obesity, even though they do not have surgery, and 35.8 million people live with physical disabilities. In obese people; High risk of heart attack and Cancer (such as Colon, Breast and Uterine Cancers), the majority of diabetics being obese, Muscle and Joint diseases being common are the main reasons for the risk of death and disability. For example; While obesity has doubled in the last thirty years, Type 2 Diabetes has also increased at the same rate. This is a clear indicator of the relationship between Obesity and Diabetes.
However, today, 400 thousand obesity surgeries are performed annually in the world and the number of people who die after these surgeries is 800. In Turkey, 20 thousand obesity surgeries are performed annually and around 20 people a year die within the first month after the surgery. However, we are faced with the fact that the number of people who die due to obesity in a year is 4 thousand times higher. What is emphasized here is the fact that people who think surgery is risky and do not undergo surgery are vulnerable to many diseases due to obesity. There are many patients who have infertility problems just because they are obese, who have to undergo knee prosthesis surgery due to knee wear, and who have Lumbar Disc Herniation. It should not be forgotten that people who are obese and have diabetes face the risks of blindness, kidney failure, and gangrene in the legs. It is very important that the person who is considering obesity surgery has this surgery by the right doctor and in the right center. While the problems that may be encountered are 10 times less with a good surgical team, At the same time, an experienced team will be able to overcome problems more successfully. That's why; It should be preferred that the team that will perform the obesity surgery performs at least 100 obesity and diabetes surgeries per year. Suggestions of people who have had these surgeries before may be guiding in this regard.
As a result; Every surgery has its own risks and there is no surgery with zero risk. Surgeries performed due to obesity and diabetes are in the low, medium risk group and are not high risk. For example, gallbladder, appendicitis, goiter and rhinoplasty surgeries can be performed with similar risks. Therefore, obesity and diabetes surgeries are the most effective and permanent treatment methods to get rid of the risk of many serious health problems, including death, provided that they are performed by experienced doctors in reliable hospitals.
