Living with Epilepsy

Epilepsy, also known as "epilepsy" among the public, is a short-term disorder of brain functions. It occurs as a result of temporary abnormal electrical emissions in brain cells. Epilepsy disease affects approximately 1 percent of the world's population.

THERE ARE MANY CAUSES

Brain cells send messages to the whole body with their electrical activity. Electrical activity in the brain always continues. Disorders in brain activity may be caused by the following situations: Stroke, brain infections (meningitis, encephalitis, etc.), serious head trauma, oxygen deprivation of the baby during birth, etc. Epilepsy seizures may occur as a result of reasons such as. However, in most cases, the underlying cause of epilepsy cannot be determined with certainty. On the other hand, the presence of this disease in the families of some epilepsy patients shows that epilepsy also has a hereditary aspect.

HOW IS THE TREATMENT?

The basic treatment of epilepsy is called "Antiepileptics". Noting that it is done with the medications given, Akbaş said, “These medications are intended to prevent the occurrence of epileptic seizures. In order for the treatment to be successful, these drugs must be used regularly under the supervision of a doctor. If there is an increase in the number of seizures, if other complaints occur after starting drug treatment, if another disease has been diagnosed and its treatment has started, if there is a pregnancy or if pregnancy is in question, a specialist should be consulted. Another treatment option is surgical treatment. Before deciding on surgical treatment, it must be shown that the patient's seizures are resistant to drug treatment.

THIS IS WHAT TO DO

When encountering a person suffering from an epileptic seizure, the following should be done: 112 emergency. The service line should be called and help should be requested. Precautions should be taken around the patient, he/she should be protected from things that could cause harm. If he/she has tight clothing, he/she should be loosened (such as a tie or belt), if he/she has glasses, he/she should be removed, and his/her head should be supported softly. The person should be placed on the side where the contractions are not occurring, in a stable and comfortable manner, and the saliva should be allowed to flow out. There is a sign on the patient showing that he/she has epilepsy and what to do. It should be checked whether there is a sickness card explaining the need. How long the seizure continues should be monitored and the emergency team should be reported. The patient should be waited until the seizure is completely over. If a person is having an epileptic seizure, there is no need for respiratory or cardiac massage.

EPILEPSY AND SPORTS

Excessive physical fatigue can trigger epileptic seizures. However, a very sedentary lifestyle also triggers many diseases. Families of epilepsy patients are concerned that seizures will occur during exercise and restrict their activities in a protective manner. This is not correct behavior. Whether or not sports can be done and the selection of the appropriate sport should be evaluated individually for each patient. The appropriate sport should be determined in cooperation with the physician and coach. There are many sports that epilepsy patients can do, such as walking, yoga, cardio exercises and chess.
