What is Granulomatous Mastitis?

Granulomatous mastitis is a rare inflammatory disease of the breast and occurs mostly in women of childbearing age within two years after pregnancy. It is difficult to make a definitive diagnosis without a biopsy, as it can be difficult to differentiate from breast cancer even with mammography or ultrasonography.

Patients who apply to the doctor with complaints of a lump in the breast and pain, usually on one side, sometimes experience nipple retraction, discharge, armpit glands, and skin irregularities. Complaints such as visual acuity may be present.

After a definitive diagnosis is made, the disease is treated with corticosteroids or surgical removal of the mass.
