Vaginal Discharge and Infection

Normally, every woman of reproductive age has some transparent, slippery and odorless vaginal discharge. This normal vaginal fluid is called “physiological vaginal discharge”.

VAGINAL DISCHARGE AND ITCHING

Physiological (normal) vaginal discharge tends to increase as the day of ovulation approaches during the menstrual period; In some cases, it may even protrude beyond the vagina to the point of contaminating the laundry. This discharge, which is seen during the ovulation period, has the consistency of egg white on the day of ovulation, and takes on a slimy and transparent appearance that extends when pulled. A vaginal discharge like this is a sign of "ovulation". Physiological discharge is colorless, odorless, although it may be excessive; It does not cause itching or irritation. One of the most important features of the vagina is that it contains beneficial bacteria called "lactobacilli" in its flora, which are involved in defense against harmful bacteria. Lactobacilli are also called “milk bacilli”. Lactobacilli have the ability to grow in the acid pH of the vagina, thus protecting the vagina from harmful microbes.

Vaginal infections (vaginitis) may occur in many cases where the number of lactobacilli decreases. For example, this is the reason why vaginal fungus occurs as a result of antibiotic use. Inflammation of the vagina is called “vaginitis” and inflammation of the cervix is called “cervicitis”. The most important findings of vaginitis and cervicitis are "pathological vaginal discharge" that has a different structure than normal, that is, non-physiological. Pathological vaginal discharge indicates that the person has a disease. Discharge in vaginitis has some characteristics different from physiological discharge; It is more abundant, may have a bad, unpleasant odor, and has a thick consistency. Sometimes it can have the consistency of milk curds, and sometimes it is foamy and rich in yellow-green color.

Inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) manifests itself with groin and lower back pain, as well as abnormal vaginal discharge. Apart from vaginal infection (vaginitis) and cervical infection (cervicitis), many gynecological diseases can cause vaginal discharge. Foreign substances such as perfumes, pads, vaginal tampons or condoms used in the genital area cause irritation in the vagina. may cause discharge. Apart from all these reasons, although rare, cancerous tumors related to the reproductive organs may also cause complaints of discharge. As mentioned before, vaginal infection is called "vaginitis", while cervix infection is called "cervicitis".

Both vaginitis and cervicitis can cause vaginal discharge in women. Bacterial vaginosis (Gardnerella vaginitis, non-specific vaginitis): Having smelly vaginal discharge is considered a typical finding for bacterial vaginosis. Fungal infections (Vaginal fungal infections): Cheesey (viscous) or milky white discharge from the vagina is associated with a fungal infection. Trichomonas infections (Trichomoniasis, Trichomonas vaginalis): Greenish, frothy discharge and vaginal burning may suggest trichomoniasis infection. Gynecological diseases that cause vaginal discharge by causing cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix) in women: Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma Infections Chlamydia Infections (Chlamidiasis, Chlamydiosis): The most common sexually transmitted disease in women is chlamidia infections.

is to ensure that it happens. At the same time, physiological vaginal discharge prevents irritation when the lips rub against each other while walking. In women who have entered menopause, the decrease in the secretion of vaginal fluid due to the lack of estrogen hormone causes the complaint of "vaginal dryness". Normally, every woman of reproductive age has some transparent, slippery and odorless vaginal discharge. This normal vaginal fluid is called "physiological vaginal discharge".

One of the benefits of this fluid, secreted from the cervical glands in the cervix and the glands in the vaginal area under the influence of female hormones, is to ensure comfortable sexual intercourse by providing vaginal lubrication. At the same time, physiological vaginal discharge causes the lips to move while walking. It prevents irritation by rubbing against each other.
