If He Vomits Frequently, He Might Have Reflux!

You can deal with reflux with simple but effective methods

Although reflux, defined as the spontaneous movement of stomach contents towards the esophagus, is known as an adult disease in the society, it is actually a problem that occurs more often in babies and children. Although there is no clear data on the frequency of the disease, it is estimated that it is seen at a rate of 1-10 percent in all childhoods. While reflux is seen in 75 percent of children aged 4 months, this rate spontaneously decreases to 5 percent at the age of 1 year. The reasons why reflux is common in babies are that the muscle structure in the junction of the esophagus and stomach is not yet well developed and babies are usually fed with liquid foods and are in a lying position. Child Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Kemal Erdinç stated that almost every baby vomits up some of the milk after breastfeeding or eating formula and said, "This is a normal situation and is not considered a disease. When the baby approaches one year of age, he can sit and walk on his own, as well as with the transition to solid foods, reflux symptoms usually appear." "These babies do not need to be treated. However, if there are suspicious symptoms such as continuous vomiting, especially in babies who cannot gain enough weight, they should definitely consult a physician. Because recurrent reflux can cause growth and development retardation in babies," he warns.

IT CAN CAUSE TEMPORARY RESPIRATORY STOP

In babies, reflux can cause inflammation of the esophagus and lead to restlessness, writhing and dissatisfaction with feeding. More importantly, some reflex mechanisms can cause temporary respiratory arrests called apnea. Stomach contents leaking into the lungs can lead to a significant lower respiratory tract infection, although it is not common.

ATTENTION IF YOU HAVE THESE SYMPTOMS

If your baby has some of the following symptoms, consult a physician without delay.

Frequent vomiting. Inability to gain weight. Restlessness, crying. Feeling discomfort due to stomach contents reaching up to the mouth. . Since this condition occurs more in babies in the lying position, they may wake up crying at night and cannot sleep for long periods of time. Apart from these symptoms, they only have a persistent cough, wheezing and hoarseness may also occur.

What are the causes?

Exactly are the causes of reflux in babies. Although not fully understood, it is known that the following factors play a role; increased pressure.Environmental factors, exposure to smoking.Obesity.Disorder in eating habits, excessive filling of the stomach with food.Food allergy.Neurological diseases such as cerebral palsy.

THESE PRECAUTIONS IT WILL HELP YOU DEAL WITH REFLUX

Preventive treatment and lifestyle changes form the basis of treatment. Reflux in babies generally progresses well and since most of it is physiological, it usually resolves spontaneously without the need for treatment when the following precautions are taken. Child Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Kemal Erdinç lists the precautions you should take as follows:

Feed with breast milk as much as possible. If you are feeding with formula, prefer thickened food. Increase the frequency of feeding by reducing meal volumes. Be careful not to bottle feed. , because when it cannot take the food from the bottle, it swallows more air, which triggers reflux. After the meal, walk it in an upright position without laying it down for 1 hour. Babies swallow air while feeding and stomach tension increases. Therefore, make sure that babies burp orally after feeding. Although babies lying face down reduces reflux, this way of lying is not recommended due to the risk of sudden baby death.
