•Rotavirus infections are one of the most important causes of serious diarrheal diseases in children under 5 years of age, regardless of socioeconomic status, all over the world.
•Rotavirus causes approximately 440,000 deaths and 2.3 million hospitalizations in the world every year.
• Approximately 5-6% of deaths in children under the age of 5 are due to diarrhea caused by this virus. Most deaths are in children under 2 years of age. The most severe form is experienced in children between the ages of 3 months and 2 years.

• Rotavirus is a 70 nm non-enveloped, double-stranded RNA virus from the reoviridae family. Even very small amounts of virus (<100 virus particles) can cause infection. After the virus enters the body through the mouth, it cannot be neutralized by stomach acid and attaches to the small intestines, starting the disease process. Rotaviruses are excreted in the feces between a few days before the diarrhea begins and 10 days after the diarrhea begins.
• While rotavirus infections are seen in the cold winter months in temperate climate countries, they are seen all year round in tropical countries.
