The Place of Stress in Our Lives and Ways to Cope with Stress

If we were to define stress in general terms; We can say that these are distressing and painful life events that are difficult for the person, create a feeling of pressure and frustration, and lead to a feeling of helplessness. We see that the stress factor has become a way of life that we can encounter under almost every condition. It exists in our lives at home, at school, at work, in our social life and in many other areas. There are generally two types of natural reactions that people give to situations caused by stress. People react to stressful events by either fighting or running away. These two types of reactions are nourished by people's basic beliefs in themselves. So, if we ask what these beliefs are; When a person is faced with a stress factor and approaches this situation with the words "I can succeed, I am strong, I can find a solution", the fight reaction occurs. In other words, they exhibit a combative approach due to their fundamental belief. If a person approaches the stress factor by saying "I am inadequate, I cannot succeed, I cannot produce a solution, I must stay away from here to avoid getting harmed", he/she shows the classic escape reactions. Which of these reactions people are more prone to is determined by their personality structure, which consists of traces of past experiences.

Stress, which has a motivating role in our lives if we can keep it under control, appears to negatively affect our physical, spiritual and mental health if experienced too much. Stress allows the body to prepare itself to react and take action, that is, it activates the person for behavior. However, as stress stimuli increase, the person begins to experience more stress. And this situation harms the person after a certain level. While regular exposure to stress affects the person significantly, experiencing an ideal level of stress increases productivity. If we divide the natural symptoms of our body against stress into physiological and emotional, physiological symptoms are; There are factors such as headache, muscle aches, indigestion, high blood pressure, sweating and decreased energy. Emotional symptoms are; Manifested by anxiety, worry, depression, tension, decreased self-confidence, outbursts of anger, insecurity, hypersensitivity

In order to cope with stress, knowing some factors is a priority. These factors; It means accepting new conditions, being aware of changing conditions and being flexible. Conditions are not always the same, and it is not possible to stabilize changing conditions. Not accepting negative situations and complaining will serve no purpose other than tiring our body and mind. On the contrary, it will increase stress and tension. For this reason, alternative solutions to stress should be developed.

If we learn how to deal with the causes of stress, we can prevent the permanence of stress and prevent it from turning into other diseases. First of all, you should realize what stresses you. Because a person can only find solutions for things he is aware of. To realize this, writing down stressful situations and noting your thoughts at that moment will help your awareness. And then we need to produce alternative thoughts to these stressful thoughts. For example, you could not complete a job that you were responsible for at your workplace, this causes you stress and your current thought will be, "I'm sure my boss will be very angry with me for not being able to complete this job." Let's think of a different thought that can be an alternative to this thought: "If I make the necessary explanation to my boss, he will understand me and give me additional time." Such alternative thoughts will be very beneficial in controlling our stress. Another powerful coping method would be to learn how to do proper breathing exercises. The easiest way to relax our body and brain is correct breathing exercises. Doing breathing exercises where you sit in a place where you have time for yourself, with your eyes closed and focus only on your breathing, will help your body functions to function more regularly and your body to calm down. We see that people who manage to control their stress generally have a hobby or a passion in their lives. Therefore, having a passion that one loves plays an important role in both the quality of one's life and as a stress-reducing factor.

Using time effectively reduces stress. is one of the elements. If you promise to complete a task that you cannot complete within a certain time period, you will spend stressful moments focusing on how to complete the task on time rather than focusing on the task itself. For this reason, knowing ourselves well, knowing what our limits are, predicting how long we will complete which task, and knowing how to use our time in the most appropriate way at every moment of our lives will prevent our stress from increasing.

How important is proper nutrition physiologically for the health of our body? If it is important, it also appears as an important element for coping with stress. A person with a physically healthy body will feel fit in the situations he/she tries to cope with in his/her daily life, will determine more effective and correct strategies, and will have a stronger ability to cope. In addition to proper nutrition, physical exercise will make the person feel vigorous and strong and will also increase his self-confidence.

Remembering how we overcame the situations we experienced in the past is very useful in coping with similar difficult situations we are faced with. Referring to past knowledge will help a person increase his courage and take a confident approach in producing solutions.
