CIRCUMCISION

Circumcision is a tradition, a practice that has been done for thousands of years as a religious necessity. In recent years, with the understanding of the importance of child mental health, the importance of circumcision in terms of spiritual development has begun to be discussed.

The most important period in children's spiritual development in terms of sexual identity is between the ages of 3-6. During this period, children try to discover the differences between boys and girls and make sense of them in their own way. The boy, who realizes that girls do not have a penis, fears that he may lose his own penis (castration). This is called fear of castration. The boy, who thinks that he is valuable in society because he has a penis, experiences intense fear and anxiety because the feeling of loss will come true when he hears that his penis will be cut off. Therefore, what circumcision is, how it is done and who tells it to the child are very important. Unless there is a medical necessity, circumcision is not recommended between the ages of 3-6 in terms of spiritual development. Such concerns will not arise in circumcision performed during infancy. In fact, since recovery is faster during this period, it will be easier to get through this process. If the age of circumcision is postponed until after the age of 6, preferably the father or a person the child trusts should explain what circumcision is and how to do it. All procedures should be explained from beginning to end, with reassurances such as that the child's external thoughts of losing and experiencing terrible pain are not real, that it will not be cut, that a correction will be made at the tip of the penis, that it will not feel pain during the procedure because it will be anesthetized, and how much pain it may feel afterwards. Again, explaining and performing the procedure by the physician who will perform it in close proximity to the child will significantly reduce the child's anxiety. Circumcision ceremony, clothes and ceremonies All activities have long been aimed at reducing the child's anxiety. Therefore, if such an organization is planned, it may be comforting for the child to do it simultaneously when the child is circumcised.

A circumcision prepared by a physician, under appropriate hygienic conditions, by a person the child trusts and by informing the physician in advance that the procedure will be performed, is spiritually It will be a homework that the child will get through without much trouble.
