The humming sensation can be like the sound of a whistle, wind, or waves. We describe all of these as tinnitus. If the hum is heard in both ears, it is usually caused by a systemic disease. It's like blood pressure, diabetes.
What Does It Mean If Humming Is In One Ear?
In this case, we would be a little alarmed. We investigate whether there is a brain tumor or unilateral vascular anomaly at the source of the problem. For example, if calcification in the neck presses on the vein, it can cause a buzzing sensation in the ear. If the person is a smoker, we check whether there is a vascular occlusion in the neck. That's why we want to see the neck veins and blood flow in these patients.
Is the duration of the humming important?
If we are talking about a hum that lasts more than 2-3 weeks, you should definitely go to the doctor. If the underlying cause is determined, the problem may disappear. For example, even a very simple cause such as earwax can cause buzzing and ringing. If you eliminate this problem with a simple operation, the hum will go away. In some cases, the problem may be psychological. In this case, it is necessary to refer the person to a psychiatrist.
Does Psychology Affect Humming?
Yes. For example, losing someone in the family, being unemployed, worrying about the future disrupts the blood flow to the ear. This can manifest itself as a ringing in the ear. Tinnitus is actually reporting the news of 'The ear is not feeding well'. Apart from that, when patients get stuck with that sound, their daily life may be interrupted. We have patients who have to take antidepressants seriously.
Is it normal for the hum to increase in the evening?
Because we are in quieter environments in the evening, the patient feels the ringing more. Even though we are not aware of it during the day, there is a noise of maybe 10 decibels in the environment we live in. In that noise, the ringing disappears, you don't hear it. But when you move into a quiet environment, the mask effect of that noise disappears, and you hear the existing ringing. A second reason is that the ear, which is exposed to sound all day, gets tired in the evening. Just like when you go to the stadium and shout, your voice is hoarse. When the ear gets tired, it notifies you with a ringing.
It should be noted that neither buzzing nor ringing does not cause hearing loss. These are the result of an existing problem, not the cause.
