High Functioning Autism is mostly used in clinical practice for individuals with Autism who are in good condition both in terms of intelligence and social adaptation.
Asperger's Syndrome was transferred to the Occupational Medicine Literature in 1944 by Hans Asperger, a Viennese pediatrician. This disorder, which is later included in the diagnostic system; It defined children who have deficiencies in terms of quality in social and emotional development, limited interests, and therefore have difficulty in maintaining their daily lives like their peers. Language development of children with Asperger's Syndrome was normal, close to normal, and their intelligence level was generally good.
So what are the differences between High Functioning Autism and Asperger's?
Individuals with Asperger's Syndrome Compared to other autistic children;
They are more willing to establish friendships but try to do it in a "strange" way,
They have more developed and broader interests,
Generally, they do not have speech delays, but they prefer to talk longer in line with their own interests,
They are in a better position in terms of cognitive (intelligence),
that they are different than other autistic children It can be said that it is noticed at a later age,
The rate of independent living is higher when they grow up
It can be said that individuals with Asperger's behave more meticulously, prescriptively, seriously, and think systematically in their work life. Having better skills and being able to focus well in the areas they enjoy can be counted among the advantageous features. Being strict and prescriptive according to the work done can also create a disadvantage. On the other hand, they may experience difficulties in interpersonal relations when they force others to follow the same rules or when they (cannot) abide by simple social rules.
Leaving aside the similarities and differences between them; Rather than focusing on what the diagnosis is, it is much more important to evaluate and support the areas where children have difficulty or are more competent.
