What is it?
It is a disease in which the big toe turns outward and protrudes on the inside of the big toe area.
Causes
It is claimed that the development of this deformity is caused by wearing narrow, pointed shoes for a long time in many patients. In some people, the presence of this deformity in the family suggests that there may be a genetic transmission. It is 9 times more common in women. Flat feet are also a common deformity in patients with cerebral palsy, polio and rheumatoid arthritis.
Clinically, when this protrusion gets stuck in the shoe, skin redness and pain occur. Over time, the sac under the skin called bursa collects water and pain and swelling increase. Over time, the thumb is pushed above or below the second finger.
Diagnosis can be made by the appearance of the foot. However, radiography is also taken to evaluate bone and joint conditions.
Treatment
The first approach to non-surgical treatment is to use comfortable shoes for the patient. The shoe should be wide enough and the toe area should not be narrow. In the vast majority of cases, pain disappears with appropriate footwear. To reduce pain, interfinger rollers, interfinger silicone or night splints may be helpful. However, they cannot treat the deformity. The main principle of the treatment is to correct the pressure defect that is impaired due to the deformity of the thumb. Again, with specially made insoles, patients' incorrect pressing caused by this deformity is corrected. An attempt is made to normalize the balance of the areas of the foot that carry too much weight. For patients who do not benefit from these, surgical treatment methods are planned.
