Surgical treatment of morbid obesity is now called 'Bariatric Surgery' and
'Metabolic Surgery'. The term 'Bariatric' comes to the fore when the treatment method
primarily aims to help the patient lose weight.
The word 'Metabolic' is more often preferred when the primary goal is to contribute to the treatment of the patient's diabetes. In fact, both
are intertwined concepts. It is expected that a person suffering from morbid obesity will have diabetes
or be prone to diabetes.
Obesity is a disease that facilitates the emergence of diabetes and, if there is diabetes, worsens its course. If effective weight loss is achieved in these patients, there will be positive developments in the course of diabetes. While many patients get rid of diabetes completely, some reduce the amount of medication they use for the disease. Recently, surgical
methods have come to the fore only to treat diabetes, ignoring the
weight of the patient. It is certain that these have short-term benefits, but it is not yet known what kind of negative effects these methods may cause to patients in the long term. Since many of them cause important anatomical changes in the gastrointestinal
system, while they positively affect diabetes
, they may cause other metabolic problems. For this
reason, great care should be taken when determining treatment options.
