Our emotions are the cornerstone of our experiences (Zimbardo & Gerrig, 2012). It enriches our relationship with the environment we interact with. Our emotions regulate our social relationships, guide our behavior, enable us to decide what is important, and help us better adapt to living conditions. Our emotions are a complex form of our physical changes, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors in response to events and situations. Our emotions are reflected in our facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language. For example, our fear of a threat or our surprise at an unexpected event is primarily reflected in facial expressions. In addition, factors such as our heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, hormone level, which cannot be noticed from the outside, are also effective in the formation of our emotions. For example, our hormonal changes can sometimes make us more emotional. These are the physical changes that make up our emotions. Along with physical changes, our feelings, thoughts and behaviors come together to form our emotions. Our physical changes occur as a result of the interrelationship of our mental evaluations and behaviors. They are short-lived, not permanent, and have different intensities. Emotions are mostly involuntary, just like our reflexes. Unlike emotions, moods last much longer and may not be as distinct and clear as emotions. Although the intensity of the emotion we experience and the way we express it are different in each of us, it has been found that 6 basic emotions, especially fear, disgust, happiness, surprise, anger and sadness, are universal. That's why in every culture these feelings can be understood from their facial expressions. In addition to the universality of the mentioned emotions, there is also a cultural aspect. Cultures have social rules about the way they express certain emotions. So even though some of our emotions are universal, culture can change the way we experience them. For example, while suppressing emotions and preventing emotional expression have become a cultural norm in the east, comfortable expression of emotions has been more prominent in the west. Therefore, while children are raised to control their emotions in eastern cultures, they are supported to live their emotions in western cultures. This shows, among other factors, that we feel our emotions according to the culture we live in.
In summary, our emotions do not occur for a single reason. Our physical changes are formed as a result of the interrelationship of our mental evaluations and actions and are shaped according to the expectations of the culture we live in.
