It manifests itself with a group of symptoms in which the ability to evaluate reality is impaired in the areas of emotion, thought and behavior. There is a distorted mindset, perceptions and thoughts that are increasingly disconnected from reality. The individual is increasingly disconnected from healthy human relationships. The age of onset is rare before 13 years. The first onset usually occurs during adolescence. There are features in affect that we define as dullness, dullness, or inappropriate affect. Sensitivity (ideas of reference), thought disorders (delusions), bizarre behaviors, frequent and intense masturbation, social withdrawal, disharmony, disruption in sleep and biorhythm, insomnia, withdrawal from school, impairment in school adaptation and functionality are common.
Although familial predisposition is a common condition, it can also be seen without any. However, if there is a family history of schizophrenia, the frequency of occurrence increases exponentially.
The frequency of occurrence in all societies is around 1-2 percent. The frequency of occurrence does not differ between men and women. Early onset is generally considered a sign of poor prognosis. Paranoid schizophrenia and schizoaffective schizophrenia are types of schizophrenia with a better prognosis and less destruction.
Treatment;
It contains similar principles both in childhood and adults.
The priority is;
- Medication treatment,
- Individual psychotherapeutic approaches.
- Family therapy, family support and environmental (school) etc.) adjustments may be required.
New generation antipsychotic drugs may be more easily tolerated in terms of their side effect spectrum. Less negative effects on vital functionality are observed. Its sedation/sleep-inducing properties, effects on metabolism (weight increase), striated muscle contraction/extrapyramidal side effects may be less. However, it should not be forgotten that while tolerance to the side effects of drugs gradually decreases, tolerance to their therapeutic effects does not develop.
In 25-30% of cases, regardless of the type of treatment applied, it is resistant and there is no significant improvement and it gradually becomes chronic.
