What are the Features of Silicone Breast Prostheses?

-The outer surface is made of a hard shell, and the inside is made of soft and gel-like silicone.

-The outer shell is extremely resistant to pressure. This structure can carry 40 kg load in 1 cm area. It does not explode under pressure. But it can be pierced with sharp objects. Even if the outer capsule is punctured, they continue to maintain their shape due to the memory gel silicone inside.

-Silicone is the least allergenic substance known to the body. Therefore, it is not expected to cause an allergic reaction.

-It does not pass into milk secretion and has no known side effects on breast diseases (including cancer).

-It does not prevent routine mammography for women over the age of 40.

-The only known problem with silicone breast prosthesis is 'Capsule Contraction'. Capsule contraction; It is the sometimes severe development of the fibrous capsule that develops physiologically over a certain period of time and surrounds the prosthesis. Although this is rare, the prosthesis may need to be removed in severe capsular contractures.

How Are Breast Prostheses Classified According to Their Shape?
Breast prostheses are classified as 'drop (anatomical)' and 'breast prostheses' in shape. It is produced as round. Round prostheses are used for breasts where the fullness above the nipple is desired, and anatomical prostheses are used for breasts where an enlargement appropriate to the natural form of the breast is desired.

How and Where are Breast Prostheses placed in the Body?
Breast prosthesis can be placed through the armpit, nipple or sub-breast groove. Because placement can be done through this incision, causing minimal damage to the breast tissue and other surrounding tissue.

Another issue is which tissue layer the breast portthesis will be placed on.

If there is no or very little breast tissue, the prosthesis must be placed in the submuscular plan. Submuscular placement is not recommended in patients with sufficient breast tissue.
