Is "Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder" Just Having Attention Problems or Being Overactive?

“Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder” is a condition in which the symptoms generally become clear in primary school age, and it progresses with the inability to maintain attention on a subject for a long time, quickly getting bored of activities that require mental effort such as studying, delaying such activities as much as possible, and excessive activity. While some children do not have hyperactivity but only symptoms of attention deficit, some children have only hyperactivity, and some children have both attention deficit and hyperactivity together. Children with only attention deficit may be noticed a little later because they are generally calmer, more harmonious children.

With the concept we call "hyperactivity", we mean both hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. When we say hyperactivity, we mean children who are much more active than their peers, who are constantly fidgety, fidgety, have difficulty sitting still, and whose lives are affected in some way due to their mobility. Some families say that their children are not overly active, but constant fidgeting and moving their hands and feet is actually a symptom for us. The important point here is to decide whether the child is just a little more active, a little more energetic, a child whose life is going well, who has no problems in classes or at home, and who is in harmony with his friends, or a child who has losses in life and whose life is affected due to his mobility. So how are the lives of these children affected? Sometimes they have accidents, sometimes they may unintentionally injure their friends, sometimes they experience difficulties in the social sphere and in their relationships because they cannot wait their turn in games, and because they cannot sit still in lessons and sometimes disrupt the order of the lesson, they often receive warnings from their teachers or their parents at home. Of course, apart from this, since they cannot pay attention to the lesson at school for a long time, do not do any extra work at home, and get bored with activities such as reading books, their academic success gradually begins to decline, and after a while, they may even become reluctant to go to school. As they get older, their grades decrease, and the warnings from teachers and parents increase, these children begin to lose their self-confidence, and sometimes depression follows. Sometimes these children are killed by their families and teachers. Because they are children who have given up on hope, are excluded by their peers, and are scapegoats in the classroom, they begin to develop behavior problems and begin to hang out with other groups of children/young people with behavioral problems. Of course, these may be followed by starting to smoke, substance use and risky behaviors. Therefore, the condition we call attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is not just a simple picture, it brings other problems, causes conflict between parents and the child, and begins to leave negative effects on the identity of the child and adolescent.

In scientific studies, the most effective method in treatment is medication. Although there are treatments, there are also behavioral methods. Here I am calling out to parents and teachers: "Please get support from an expert before problems increase, relationships deteriorate, academic success hits the bottom, and the child develops low self-confidence, depression or behavioral problems."
