Does Diabetes Cause Vision Loss?

Sudden increases and decreases in blood sugar can cause diabetic retinopathy by affecting the vessels in the retina, the nerve layer of the eye that provides vision. Ophthalmologists Op. Dr. Adnan İpçioğlu stated that the incidence of diabetic retinopathy increases especially in people who have had diabetes for more than 10 years and said, “There is a risk of this eye disease for all patients with diabetes. Therefore, it is beneficial for everyone with diabetes to have a comprehensive eye examination at least once a year. The longer a person has had diabetes, the greater the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. ” he said.

Early Diagnosis is Important
The importance of early diagnosis in diabetic retinopathy disease. Bursa Arrhythmia Ophthalmologists Op. Dr. Adnan İpçioğlu warned that the patient should have an eye examination immediately after the diagnosis of diabetes and that they should continue routine eye examinations as part of their diabetes controls at 1-year intervals. Kiss. Dr. İpçioğlu said, “Especially fundus examination enables the detection of changes in the retina at an early stage and offers the patient the chance of successful treatment. After the diagnosis of diabetes, patients with diabetes for more than 5 years should have an eye examination every 6 months, and diabetics with fundus problems should have an eye examination every 3 months. The frequency of examination is determined by the ophthalmologist as necessary.” he said.

Laser Treatment
Op., one of Bursa Arrhythmia Ophthalmologists, stated that the only proven method to treat diabetic retinopathy is "Laser Photocoagulation". Dr. Adnan İpçioğlu gave the following information about the treatment: “The main purpose of the treatment is to suppress the stimuli arising from the retinal tissue in the periphery, which is not sufficiently nourished; Thus, it prevents the formation of new bleeding vessels and bleeding and preserves the patient's vision level. This treatment, if applied at the appropriate time and appropriately, is the only way to prevent serious vision loss due to diabetes. Early detection of retinopathy findings is the key to treatment success.” The complaint of light vision is frequently encountered. This is not due to retinopathy; It may be caused by the high blood glucose level at that time. It may take several weeks for the blood glucose level to return to normal, and once control is achieved, blurred vision disappears. During this temporary blurriness period, changing glasses is not a suitable method.
