TEOG

“My son Mehmet Fatih,

Your main duty is to study the lesson of being a student and responsibility. What you need to do on the exam day is to mark what you know on your answer sheet, using the time wisely. The result is not under your control, it is the institution that conducts the exam, which takes many factors into consideration, and will determine the result. Since you will not determine whether you will be successful or not, work on the reason (work and reflect what you know on your paper), do not interfere with the rest, leave it to what it will be (trust in it). Don't think about the outcome, use your energy for what you can do.

You can get excited like your other friends before and during the exam. Remember that the person who knows gets excited. Like any student, you may get distracted or get stuck on a question. Use the tactics you learned from your teachers, rest for a short time (10 seconds) to regain your attention, move on to the question you know and go back to the question you are stuck on if time increases.

The exam you take only depends on how much information you are given. It measures what you know and how you use your time. Moreover, this exam is not the only measure of how knowledgeable you are. The exam does not measure you as an individual, your mind, your intelligence and your unique beauty. Therefore, avoid thinking "If I fail this exam, people will think negative things about me." If you fail the exam, then it is not you who have failed, but your studying and preparation behavior.

My son,

Please. Think of this and the next exams as investments for your future, work for yourself and succeed. Don't think about us as parents. It is true that we have endured material and moral difficulties for you, but these efforts are not a favor we do to you, they are efforts we make for ourselves with the sense of responsibility of being a mother and father and we consider it our duty. Until now, what have you asked us, "Which school should I go to?" What should I buy? What do I do?" You asked, nor did we act solely according to your will. Do not believe the erroneous thought that "If I fail the exam, my mother and father will be upset." You are our precious person, and our thoughts about you will not change just because this test has passed or not.

As your mother and father, we have witnessed your efforts. We are pleased with you, I hope the future will be good for you. What is important for us is not the result of your exam, but that you have done your duty as a student, which is your primary duty.”

Next week is TEOG week and many of our children, including my son, will take this exam. They have both excitement and tension these days. I am sharing the text of the conversation I will have with my son with my other parents so that we can give similar messages to our children and reassure them.
