Today I turned on the television and browsed through the channels. Nutrition is discussed on almost every channel. 'Consume that food, do not consume that' etc. lots of expressions. So who is speaking? Some are cardiologists, some are internal medicine specialists... It is also possible, although rare, to come across a nutritionist.
What is 'Nutrition'? Why is it so important? Is it that easy to learn? Most importantly, is what is being talked about enough?
Nutrition has been talked about a lot in recent years and will be talked about for many years to come. We now know that regardless of our genetic structure, when a healthy lifestyle and the right nutrition model come together, we can be protected from diseases by 70-80%.
Our lifestyle has changed over the years. The rapid increase in urbanization, the intensity of our business lives, etc. For some reason, we all have hustle and bustle in our lives. This lifestyle change has affected our nutrition. While the calories we consumed increased, the calories we spent decreased. Our food choices have changed. Fast food and carbonated drinks have rapidly entered our lives. Our protein consumption has increased. While consuming less vegetables and fruits, we also forgot to move. When environmental factors are added to these, the incidence of obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and cancer increased.
When this is the case, 'nutrition' has gained importance. Everyone is talking about nutrition. But we skipped the question 'how will all this affect our environment?'
In addition to rapid population growth, changes in our consumption habits, increasing environmental pollution, and rapid consumption of renewable and non-renewable resources have become an important problem that concerns both the present and the future. The fact that our resources are limited and the balance between population growth rate and food production is gradually deteriorating poses a great danger for all of us in terms of food security in the near future.
For all these reasons, today we need not only 'adequate and balanced nutrition' but also 'adequate, balanced nutrition'. We need to talk about 'balanced and sustainable nutrition' and plan our nutrition program accordingly.
What have we forgotten to talk about until today? What can we do? Let's take a look.
While talking about obesity, we forgot those who cannot access food. A child dies of hunger every 5 seconds in the world.
300 tons of food is wasted every 5 seconds. f happens. 6 million loaves of bread go to waste every day in Turkey. If food waste worldwide could be reduced by just 25%, the annual food needs of 870 million people could be met.
Turkey is expected to reach 100 million population in 2030. So, do we have enough food for this population?
Let's change our diet for a sustainable food future. Let's reduce our protein consumption. Let's consume less meat and more vegetables. Let's not forget that 15500 liters of water is spent to bring 1 kilogram of meat to our table.
Let's support sustainable fishing. 59% of the 161 fish species in the Black Sea are endangered. Let's not hunt before the time comes.
Let's adopt the zero waste principle. Let's give up on the disposable idea. Let's reduce our use of plastic. And most importantly, let's care about recycling.
This world belongs to all of us. Let's join hands to leave a better world to future generations. Don't worry about the precautions a person will take. 'Drop by drop, a lake becomes a lake'.
