Colic

Colic, which starts in the newborn period and generally ends around the fourth month, is one of the most common reasons for applying to the doctor, which puts the families very hard in the first months. The most commonly accepted definition is Wessel's rule of 3. According to this definition, infantile colic is defined as crying cries in babies younger than 3 months, lasting more than 3 hours a day, occurring at least 3 days a week and lasting longer than 3 weeks. Although the exact cause is unknown, we know that it is a neurodevelopmental digestive problem. It is often seen in the evening and at night. During the attack, the baby cries in a screaming style, pulls his feet to his stomach, becomes red, the abdomen is swollen and tense, intestinal sounds have increased. Families often apply to the doctor thinking that they have abdominal or body pain. It is more common in babies growing up in a stressful environment, babies exposed to cigarette smoke during pregnancy and afterward, and babies of malnourished mothers. The diagnosis is made by exclusion, that is, by exclusion of other diseases. Causes such as cow's milk allergy and lactose intolerance in severe and prolonged gas pains, finger and penile entrapment in attacks that cannot be silenced should not be forgotten. Drug and substance use should be questioned in terms of withdrawal syndrome. Examination, history and, if necessary, examinations should be done in detail. In the examination, foreign body in the eye, thrush in the mouth, ear inflammation, heart rhythm, invagination (intestinal knot), abdominal examination, gland dermatitis (rash) and anal fissure (crack in the butt) must be carefully examined. Infantile colic is often relieved by cuddling, adequate feeding, rocking, patting the back, massaging the abdomen in a clockwise direction, driving around in the car, hair dryer and vacuum cleaner sounds that remind the womb of the mother we call white noise, or with soothing calm music. The common feature of these activities is noisy gas/poop after all of them. In the treatment, empathy should be established with the family and it should be explained that this is a temporary situation, that it will end by itself, that it does not require medication, that it is less common in a calm and peaceful environment and that it ends quickly. Methods such as probiotic drops, lactase enzyme, herbal oils and teas, reflexology should be consulted with the doctor. Methods tried without consulting the doctor may lead to different results in babies.
