Hashimotodisease is a very common autoimmune thyroid disease. It is a chronic, life-long disease characterized by elevated TSH and ultrasonographically damaged thyroid gland in patients. Diagnosis is made by looking at antibodies called TSH, Anti-TPO and Anti-Tg.
Thyroid hormone must be used for life in the treatment of Hashimoto's disease. It is necessary to pay attention to some nutritional rules when using medications in the treatment of diseases.
First of all, when using medications, the medications should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach. Thyroid medication should be taken at least 45 minutes before breakfast. Vitamins, iron supplements and minerals such as calcium and magnesium should not be taken along with thyroid medication. Patients who use antacids or stomach medications due to stomach discomfort should not take these medications together with thyroid medications. These precautions are very important in adjusting the dose of thyroid medication.
Hashimoto patients need to pay attention to many important points in their nutrition. The most important of these is iodine intake. Unfortunately, our country is in a region where there is a lot of deficiency in terms of iodine. More than 10 percent of our society has iodine deficiency. Iodine is necessary for the synthesis of thyroid hormone. That's why getting enough iodine is very important. Excessive iodine intake may lead to an increase in thyroid autoantibodies. Therefore, it should be decided whether it is sufficient by looking at the iodine level in the urine.
Selenium is one of the important minerals involved in the hormone synthesis of the thyroid gland. Deficiency is not seen in people who eat healthy. Selenium is abundant in fish and other seafood, sesame seeds, tahini, walnuts, turkey, lentils, mushrooms and eggs. People who consume sufficient amounts of such foods do not have selenium deficiency. Some studies have shown that taking selenium can reduce antibody titers, especially in people with high Anti-TPO levels. There are publications showing that taking selenium reduces antibodies, especially in those who have pregnancy problems and have high antibody titers even though their TSH levels are normal.
B12 deficiency is very common in Hashimoto's patients. This is because a hormone called intrinsic factor must be released from the stomach for the absorption of vitamin B12. Intrinsic factor release in some Hashimoto patients It might be corrupted. In this case, B12 deficiency and its symptoms may be observed. If this condition is detected, it is very important to consume foods rich in B12. In cases where it is not sufficient, vitamin B12 should be taken as a hip injection or sublingual spray.
Many different autoimmune diseases can be seen in people with Hashimoto's disease. One of these is celiac disease. If Hashimoto's is accompanied by celiac disease, it is recommended to avoid baked goods containing gluten.
As a result, people with Hashimoto's disease should eat adequately in terms of iodine, selenium and Vitamin B12. Especially considering that the metabolism slows down, foods containing gluten should be avoided in order to avoid gaining weight.
