On Neuroscience in Literature and Remembering in Psychology

“Remembering in Literature”

I start this article by telling about an author whom I value so much that I don't know where to keep them in my favorite authors list; Milan Kundera, with his psychological analyzes in his novels as well as his contributions to the world of literature and art; It has called out to our doors of perception, which remain slightly open in the spring wind, with an inviting attitude:

“I imagine the excitement of two people meeting again after many years. They once met frequently and therefore they think that they are connected by the same experiences and the same memories. Same memories? This is where misunderstandings begin: their memories are not the same. They both remember two or three situations from the past, but to each their own; their memories do not resemble each other, do not overlap with each other; they cannot even be compared with each other quantitatively; "One remembers more about the other than the other remembers about himself." Milan Kundera - Not Knowing

In the paragraph above, Milan Kundera has given us the great secret of remembering, our perceptions and even our selective perceptions, forgetting, relationships at one point of life: Remembering... The mystery about the exact working method that is formed in the remote folds of our brain, that we feel with our perceptions. and my research is a field that will never end.

Although millions of wonderful works have been written on forgetting (!) in the field of literature, remembering always seems to be related to poems. (I'm saving a few words about this field for my next articles. Maybe with a few poetry examples, who knows, maybe with a poetry recital. The field of science that I saved at the end of the fourth paragraph is right in the middle of the road to give us good information:

Smell Relationship between Sense and Remembering

From a scientific perspective, there are some senses that our body has arranged over time in a way that facilitates remembering. Remembering has been an essential material for people to use since ancient times. If we look at the concept of remembering from a neurocognitive perspective, the following< br /> In the quote, the hippocampus connection, known for its active role in memory directly through the sense of smell, is discussed:

“The Thalamus receives many stimuli coming to the brain and transmits them to the relevant area of the cortex. While information from all other sensory systems is processed in the thalamus before being directed to the cerebral cortex, the sense of smell is directly processed in the amygdala-hippocampal complex of the limbic system (Herz and Engen 1996: 300). "This difference between the other senses and the sense of smell causes the organism to develop automatic behavioral patterns without conscious awareness." (Ünver, Fidan (2018, 752)
