It has been used to treat hysteria and neurasthenia in Poland, and in the United States to treat diarrhea, dysmenorrhea, neuralgia, burns, hemorrhoids, and insomnia. In India, it has been used to heal patients affected by opium addiction.
Use of Passiflora to Improve Sleep Quality
Passiflora tea or Passiflora tea is made by drying the leaves, flowers and stems of the Passiflora plant. It is frequently used among the public to reduce the level of anxiety and improve sleep quality. Recent studies have investigated the relationship between passiflora and sleep quality and have reached very promising results.
Passiflora increases gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA, an amino acid, reduces activity in the central nervous system. A study published in 2011 found that consumption of low-dose Passiflora incarnata in the form of tea, in polysomnography-validated sleep diaries, evaluated after a 1-week washout period, after distribution of 41 patients to the intervention group (passiflora tea) or placebo group, revealed that consumption of low-dose Passiflora incarnata for healthy adults with slight fluctuations in sleep quality had a short-term subjective effect.
In 2017, Medina et al. produced pre- and post-intervention polygraphic recordings from male adult Wistar rats.
