Epidural steroid injection is the injection of a mixture containing local anesthetic and steroid into the epidural space with a needle. The epidural space is located between the sac containing the spinal fluid and nerve fibers and the inner edge of the spine. The purpose of epidural steroid injection is to relieve the pain by reducing the swelling present in the nerve roots coming out of the spine.
Epidural injection is an application to relieve the patient's severe pain and deterioration in life comfort. If the weakness in the muscles, such as inability to urinate, is not bad enough to require surgery and only pain is in the foreground, epidural injection should be preferred primarily to relieve pain.
CAN EVERYONE HAVE AN EPIDURAL INJECTION?< br />
If you have an active infection, flu, cold, fever and very high blood pressure, if you have diarrhea, if you are using blood thinners such as coumadin, the procedure is not done immediately.
EPIDURAL INJECTION IS RISK MI?
In epidural injections, there may rarely be some risk of one percent. As a result of spreading to the nerves, temporary weakness and
numbness in the legs for 4 to 6 hours may occur after the application. The risk of this happening is higher in our patients who have
previously operated on the lumbar region, but as we have just mentioned, the
discomfort that occurs is temporary and the patient can go home on foot on the same day.
Again, after the epidural injection. Headaches seen in patients with diabetes, and temporary
elevations in blood sugar in diabetics may occur. /> HOW IS AN EPIDURAL INJECTION PERFORMED?
You should not drink water 3-4 hours before the epidural injection application and you should be hungry.
But you constantly use blood pressure, sugar and you can take your heart medications with a little water.
When you come to the hospital, you can take a b A sedative will be given. A preventive antibiotic will be administered before the application. Then, you will be taken to the operating room environment and you will lie on a special table that does not block X-rays, with your legs slightly bent from the waist down. After determining the place where the injection will be made in your waist with the help of a scope device, sterilization is performed and local anesthesia is performed with a thin needle. Following this, the epidural application needle is properly placed on the target under the control of C-arm scopy and the mixture containing local anesthetic and corticosteroid is given to the epidural distance. The procedure takes about 15 minutes.
- You will be taken to your room after the epidural injection. You are free to eat. You go home after you urinate.
- It is useful not to drive or have a relative with you on public transport.
- It is recommended not to take a hot shower or bath that day.
- After the application, it is beneficial to rest for 1-2 days.
