"Fear" in Children

Fear is the feeling of anxiety that occurs in real danger or the possibility of danger. Anxiety is the sadness felt that a bad outcome will occur. Often anxiety and fear are interconnected. Worrying about a situation can evoke feelings of fear.

This situation is similar for adults and children. So, do children and adults fear the same things? Children's fears may generally be related to their family and environment. He may be afraid that his caregivers will abandon him, he may be afraid of the dark, or he may be afraid of punishment. They may not be able to express their fears like adults because their language development is not at that level yet or the family does not encourage the child to express his feelings. Sometimes, the family's indifference and not spending enough time with their child can cause fear to develop in the child. These fears may sometimes even develop to attract attention.

What should I do if I realize that my child is afraid? As soon as the fear is noticed, the child should be contacted. Sometimes even just communicating can make the situation more meaningful and make him/her aware of his/her fears. If the child expresses his fear openly and his fear does not affect his life much, you can help him overcome his fear by finding ways to comfort the child. If the situation is serious, that is, if it does not decrease with what you do or if it seriously affects the daily life, it would be beneficial to consult a specialist without delay.

Since the child's language is play, play therapy can make it easier for the child to overcome his fears. Play therapy is one of several therapy methods developed for children. In play therapy, it is aimed for the child to reflect his fears by providing the trust environment he needs, to make sense of his fears with the accepting approach of the therapist, and to confront his fears on his own and overcome them.

We do not care about the fears that develop in childhood and do not want the situation to escalate. Their fears can cause deep wounds in children. It may even cause other problems to occur. That's why we must be much more sensitive about this issue.
