The Importance of the Preschool Period

Children have a natural tendency to explore and learn. Learning begins at a very early age and continues throughout life. From the moment they are born, long before they start school, children have a great enthusiasm to learn and explore: they actively explore their environment, learn to communicate, and begin to form ideas about the things they see around them. Preschool period is the foundation of life. The learning rate is very high during this period. How much a child can explore, what he can learn, and how quickly he can learn is closely related to how supportive the child's environment is and what opportunities are offered to the child. Early life experiences determine the attitudes that the child will develop towards school, learning and his own skills, and affect school success. Children who have positive experiences in the preschool period develop positive attitudes towards school, learning and their own skills. If a child has negative experiences at an early age, it may cause him/her to experience problems that will affect his/her entire educational life. It is known that children who have negative experiences in preschool age have low self-esteem, show low success in school and post-school life, and exhibit more behavioral problems.

The right to education is violated by different obstacles for different children. With the "4+4+4 education system", various problems have begun to arise for 5-5.5 year old children who are just starting school. Some of the children had to get an "insufficient" report in terms of development in order not to start school, those who started school experienced adaptation problems, and some of the children could not show sufficient development in the second term, when they started holding a pencil and writing, and had to drop out of school. When we look at the studies conducted in Turkey, it is seen that although pre-school education has been made compulsory in 71 provinces, children who start school are inadequate in reading and writing activities, especially children from disadvantaged families (poor, immigrant, etc.) drop out of education or have difficulty in learning.

Starting school requires mental, physical, emotional and social "preparation". This means that the child has no sense of It is defined as the period in which students can learn easily and adequately without experiencing any psychological difficulties. Starting school does not only mean learning to read and write. At this point; Preschool education is important because the foundation of the skills that the individual will acquire throughout his life is laid in the pre-school period. Children who start school ready by acquiring the necessary skills meet expectations more easily. Acquiring the necessary skills to learn to read, write and perform mathematical operations within the scope of preparation for primary education can only be achieved through pre-school education. The system has a history of only 15 years. While this situation causes disruptions in education, it also affects other educational processes of children. One of the issues that should be taken into consideration in the preschool period is the child's readiness level. In order for readiness to occur, maturation and learning must first occur. For example; The fact that a 6-year-old child has the mental level (age-intelligence-nervous system coordination) to learn to read and write and is willing to do so and has a positive attitude increases the level of ready invention. Preschool period is very important in terms of the child's preparation for education as well as the start of education and the play period. It is important that the child is supported by both the family and the teachers in this process.
