Tooth extraction has been our nightmare since childhood. The difficulty of extraction is for the dentist who will perform this procedure. When the infection develops in the teeth and they can no longer remain in the mouth, that is, when they become a home for germs for the body, they need to be removed. Tooth extraction is the process of removing the tooth from its socket in the bone. Simple tooth extraction is the technique used to extract visible teeth inside the mouth under local anesthesia. Considering the broad definition of tooth extraction; Surgical procedures to be performed under anesthesia may be needed in cases such as extraction of incurable teeth, situations with tooth root or bone pathologies (tumor, cyst, etc.), situations requiring implant surgery, procedures for bone formation, and cases requiring tissue preparation before prosthesis. Surgical extraction is the technique used to extract teeth that cannot be easily seen in the mouth, are broken at the gum line, or are impacted. In some cases, there may be bone on the tooth that needs to be removed. Once the tooth to be extracted is divided into sections, it may need to be removed. What should I pay attention to after tooth extraction?
• There is usually no discomfort after normal shooting, but painkillers may be required.
• Surgical extractions, on the other hand, may cause pain because they are more complicated. Depending on the difficulty of the extraction, the symptoms and duration of the discomfort experienced afterwards vary. The pain disappears a few days after the surgical extraction.
• During this period, it is important that you use the medications prescribed by your doctor regularly and correctly.
• After the extraction, blood clotting is ensured by applying pressure to the area with gauze for at least 30 minutes. During the first 24 hours, bleeding in the form of leakage may occur in the extraction area.
• To prevent post-operative swelling, ice compress should be applied to the operation area over the face. The swelling subsides within the first few days after surgery.
• Do not eat until the numbness passes. You may bite the cheek or lip in the numb area without realizing it.
• Do not take a hot bath or consume hot food and drinks for the first 24 hours.
• You should eat soft foods for the first few days after the extraction.
• Gargling with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water) will also help keep the area clean. It takes one to two weeks for healing to be completed.
• If the area was closed with stitches after the extraction, these stitches may need to be removed one week after the procedure.
• The clot formed on the wound should not be disrupted. For this reason, you should not rinse with water, spit, use straws or smoke. These increase bleeding, causing blood clots to form after the operation in the hole where the tooth was before. causes it to deteriorate. Thus, dry bone inflammation called alveolitis may occur, which may occur in 5% of all extractions.
• People who smoke have a higher risk of alveolitis formation. For this reason, smoking should not be used for 2-3 days after extraction.
If you do not have a healthy immune system, there is a risk of infection after tooth extraction. The most common complication is dry bone inflammation, which occurs when a blood clot does not form in the socket where the tooth was removed or when the blood clot that has formed is broken. In dry osteoarthritis, the underlying bone is exposed to contact with air and food debris. This is a very painful condition that can leave a bad taste and odor in the mouth. When dry bone inflammation occurs, the doctor applies dressings at regular intervals to stop the pain and ensure the healing of the area.
