Causes of Sexual Reluctance and Repair Methods

Sexual reluctance is an important problem that affects the lives of many women and men. Situations such as decreased desire to have sexual intercourse, lack of any sexual desire, decreased or absent sexual activity are all included in this problem. It is more common in women than in men. This problem can be seen in 33% of women and 14% of men. According to many different statistical studies, almost one in three women between the ages of 18-59 may experience sexual reluctance at some point in their life. Although it is usually seen due to relationship situations, stress or fatigue, it can also develop due to underlying medical reasons such as low hormone levels.

The most common causes of sexual reluctance are;

• Problems in Relationships; One of the important points to take into account in a relationship is, are you happy? Do you experience distress and sadness as an underlying cause of your lack of sexual desire? The main factors that cause sexual reluctance in a relationship are a long-term relationship and couples being too familiar, that is, like siblings. Other reasons include decreased mutual sexual attraction, poor communication, difficulty trusting each other, and physical sexual problems.

• Sexual problems; physical problems make relationships difficult; It makes you far from satisfaction and pleasure. The most common sexual problems are; Ejaculation problems, erection problems in men, vaginal dryness, vaginismus and painful intercourse in women.

• Stress, anxiety and fatigue; It reduces happiness in life and therefore sexual desire. If one feels constant stress, anxiety and fatigue, it may be necessary to change one's lifestyle and seek professional help.

• Cultural reasons; This may occur in cultures and societies where sexuality is seen as shameful and sinful.

• Aging and menopause 

• Pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding periods 

• Other underlying health problems; It can cause sexual reluctance in cases such as heart diseases, diabetes, goiter caused by thyroid hormone deficiency and cancer. • Some medications, alcohol and birth control pills

Sexual desire varies in each individual. If the individual's sexual reluctance affects his/her relationship or creates stress, he/she needs to get help. After the factors that create sexual reluctance and cause it are identified, it can be carried out with psychological treatment and/or medication, depending on the cause.

• If the underlying reasons are psychological, sexual therapy, family therapy, and individual counseling are very effective methods for couples and individuals. Sexual reluctance usually affects both parties in the relationship, and in this case it is recommended to seek professional help.

• If sexual reluctance develops due to other underlying medical problems, sexual problems that need to be treated, anatomical or hormonal problems, it is also recommended that physicians start medication or other treatment methods to eliminate these problems first.

• Sexual reluctance is a treatable problem. However, throughout the treatment process, spouses must be patient and understanding with each other and not force each other before they are fully ready.
