Do Braces Decay Teeth?...?

As our people's awareness of teeth and dental health and their aesthetic expectations increase, the demand for orthodontic treatment or braces has increased in recent years. While it is possible to have more beautiful and more aesthetic teeth with orthodontic treatment, the main goal for us physicians is to establish a healthier mouth and tooth structure.

However, as in every subject, there is correct information on this subject as well as complete There is also information that we can describe as inaccurate or dirty. One of the leading and most common of these is; “Braces rot teeth”.

Actually, this is completely incorrect information. The brackets or wires applied to the teeth do not cause stains or cavities on the teeth. However, since these structures that we glue on the teeth do not have the ability to be removed and installed by the patient, they provide an easier and more suitable environment for food residues to stick during eating. In addition, since they are fixed, it makes cleaning activity difficult during tooth brushing.

For all these reasons, we orthodontists push our patients who use such fixed appliances to spend more effort and time on oral care. In other words, we advise our patient to brush his teeth after every meal, even if it is a small snack, to continue each brushing for at least 2 minutes, to brush his teeth even without toothpaste when he is out, and to use an interdental brush and mouthwash that provide detailed cleaning at night.

Our patients, who pay attention to what I have mentioned, complete their orthodontic braces treatments without any damage or decay and continue their lives with confident smiles.
