Assoc. Prof. said that posture disorders occurred due to excessive use of phones, tablets and computers during the pandemic. Dr. Didem Sezgin Özcan said, "During this period, there is a serious increase in complaints related to spine, muscle and joint pain." Stating that spine diseases and muscle and joint pain increased with the pandemic period, Associate Professor Didem Sezgin Özcan from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Medipol Mega Hospital said, "There are many factors that trigger these pains. Inactivity, nutritional disorders, weight gain and "Stress plays a role. Due to excessive use of phones and tablet computers, posture disorders, tendon inflammations that cause pain in the wrists and fingers, trigger fingers and cyst formation, and nerve compression that can cause numbness, tingling and weakness may occur," he said.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Didem Sezgin Özcan listed the muscle and joint pain caused by smart devices in the fingers as follows:
“Trigger finger; It is a condition where the tendons get stuck and get stuck in the channels they pass through, due to overuse of the muscles that move our fingers. Calcification; It is the feeling of stiffness and pain in the hand or the development of deformities due to the deterioration of the cartilage structure. Tendonitis; It can be seen after continuous use of the keyboard, mouse or writing messages on the mobile phone. It is a state of edema and damage. Ligament Strains; These are minor injuries, especially those caused by holding the phone with one hand and sliding the thumb.”
WHAT MOVEMENTS SHOULD BE DONE TO PREVENT PAIN, WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED?
What triggers pain? Özcan said that these causes should be avoided as much as possible and made the following suggestions: For this, if you have it at home Treadmills or stationary bicycles can be used, or indoor activities such as brisk walking, dancing and rope jumping can be done. We recommend that healthy people do exercises at least 5 days a week and for more than 30 minutes. We also recommend strengthening exercises, exercises to increase joint range of motion, stretching and balance exercises. We should do these 2-3 days a week. The point I would especially like to underline here is that the type, intensity and duration of exercise should be adjusted according to the patients' health status and age. Cardiovascular, lung and diabetic patients should definitely exercise in accordance with doctor's recommendations. Pointing out that the use of tablets and phones has increased, Didem Sezgin Özcan made the following warnings for families: In this case, first of all, the usage period must be shortened. Warnings should be given about keeping the head upright. If reading from the screen, the phone should be at chin level or slightly below. The phone should be held with both hands to prevent tendon injuries. Not only the thumb but also the index finger should be used. If we are going to have long messages, we can benefit from the voice message feature and voice recognition software. If you work long hours, we recommend working from desktop computers instead of phones and tablets. We also need to pay close attention to the ergonomics of tables and chairs. We should sit in an upright position, leaning our back on the chair. Our knees should be bent at 90 degrees and our feet should touch the ground. The monitor should be at eye level and directly in front of us. We should also make sure that our wrists are straight when using the keyboard and mouse. We should take 2-3 minute breaks every 20 minutes during work. "We can minimize muscle and joint pain by taking these precautions in daily life."
