Testicular Torsion in Children

Testicular torsion is a condition that leads to testicular blood supply deterioration as a result of the testicle and its vessels turning around itself, leading to necrosis (testicular death) if not promptly intervened. Testicular torsion is a very urgent condition that presents with pain, swelling and redness in the scrotum and testis in children. Left testicular torsion is more common.

Causes of Testicular Rotation

    Testicular rotation is more common in the early neonatal period or between the ages of 13-16. . The most important finding in testicular rotation is the sudden onset of severe pain in the testis, groin and lower abdomen. Redness and edema are seen on the skin. An increasing darkening is observed in the skin color.

    Diagnosis

    If testicular torsion is suspected, Doppler Ultrasonography should be performed urgently to investigate the blood supply of the testis. In testicular torsion, blood supply decreases or disappears completely.

    Treatment

    As an emergency, the testis is returned to its normal shape by surgery. After the testicle is returned to normal, if there is a suspicion that the color of the testicle is not cleared and the circulation is not fully restored, the testicle can be left in place in children under 10 years of age, since the blood testicular barrier and sperm production have not yet formed. However, in children older than 10 years, it is recommended to remove the testis. Because antisperm antibodies formed in the necrotic testis can also damage the testis of the opposite side.
