EMG (ELECTROMYOGRAPHY)
EMG is the examination of the nerves and muscles in our body using electrical methods.
Linear electric current at a level that does not disturb the patient much. Using this method, the electrical conduction functions of the nerves are measured. For this, low-intensity electric current is applied to the fingers and skin areas above the nerves, and this current is collected from another part of the nerve or skin with computerized devices and measured. Thus, it is understood whether the nerve is functioning properly or not.
By placing thin-diameter disposable sterile needle-shaped electrodes into the muscles, it is possible to determine whether the nerve of the examined muscle is diseased or whether the muscle is healthy or not, and that the electrical activity occurring in the muscles is measured byEMG< It can be understood by monitoring and analyzing the /strong> device screen. Although needle EMGis frequently applied, in some cases only nerve conduction examinations may be sufficient.
EMG examination is an examination that takes approximately ½-1 hour, although it may vary.
When is EMG performed?
- Nerve injuries (nerve cut, traffic accidents, etc.)
- Nerve compression(carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.)
- Diagnosis of cervical and lumbar herniations
- Effects of diseases that can disrupt the functions of the nerves (such as diabetes, kidney disease) on the nerves investigation,
- Diagnosis and follow-up of facial paralysis
- Diagnosis of muscle and neuromuscular junction diseases (myasthenia, myopathy, etc.)
- Spinal cord diseases with muscle wasting ( ALS, polio etc.) diagnosis
When coming to the examination...
- It is recommended that the patient come to the examination on a full stomach.
- Since the examination is usually performed on the arms and legs, comfortable, easily removable clothes should be preferred. It is recommended that female patients do not wear pantyhose.
- Before the examination, hands and feet should be clean and creams and similar cosmetic products should not be applied.
- Hands Jewelry on the arms and legs (such as rings, bracelets, watches) should be removed before the examination as they may affect the operation. - If there are medications used regularly. There is no harm in taking them. However, patients who use blood thinners should inform the physician in advance.
- If they have a pacemaker, it is recommended to warn the physician before the examination.
