Waist and Back Pain in Children

Assoc.Prof.Dr. In his statement, Adem Yılmaz stated that there is an increase in complaints of waist and back pain in children due to reasons such as being constantly in front of the computer and television, inactivity, and carrying the school bag incorrectly.

Chronic, long-lasting low back pain in children may be congenital or acquired. Explaining that it can be caused by pathologies such as spinal problems and tumors, Yılmaz said that in case of acute low back pain that occurs as a result of a trauma, soft tissue injuries and growth plate slippage should be taken into consideration first.

Long-lasting as a result of trauma should be taken into consideration first. Stating that lower back pain can become chronic, Yilmaz gave the following information: Spinal cord tumors or infections should come to mind if waist and back pain, which increases especially at night, is accompanied by weight loss, fatigue and fever. In addition, if there are complaints such as arm and leg pain, loss of muscle strength, numbness, numbness and toilet incontinence, infection, tumor and some spinal anomalies should be taken into consideration. Although very rare, herniated disc problems can sometimes be seen in children. Mild pain can usually go away on its own or by using some painkillers. In particular, correcting posture disorders prevents back pain complaints. Particular attention should be paid to pain that lasts 30-45 days. It is beneficial to see a doctor early for long-lasting and increasing waist and back pain."

- "Be careful if the pain does not go away with rest."

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adem Yılmaz, overweight and inactive Stating that waist and back pains are more common in children, he stated that in such cases, resting and simple painkillers can be applied first.

Yılmaz emphasized that if the light treatment applied after the definition of the pain did not work, physical therapy methods can be used and continued as follows. He said:

"Prevent waist and back pain in childhood. The most ideal exercise for exercise is swimming. Swimming is very beneficial for waist and back muscles. Children with posture disorders need to be constantly warned in order to discourage these habits. Another problem is that the bags that children use to go to school are heavy. In order to eliminate this problem, cooperation should be made with the school administration and teachers. Chronic low back pain in children can also be a sign of congenital spine or spinal cord anomalies that can be overlooked for years. When findings such as regional excessive hair growth, dimple appearance, subcutaneous fat tissue accumulation observed in the back, waist or coccyx areas are observed during newborn and infancy, a physician should be consulted immediately as they may be a sign of spinal anomalies.

- "Chronic diseases observed in children Low back pain should be taken into consideration."

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adem Yılmaz pointed out that spine or spinal cord anomalies overlooked in infancy can lead to serious symptoms in addition to chronic low back pain, and said, "For example; tethered cord syndrome (tethered cord syndrome). In anomalies known colloquially as spinal cord adhesion, urinary incontinence, deformities in the feet and legs, gait disturbance, back and waist pain are observed. These diseases, which are overlooked or left untreated, can cause spinal curvatures (scoliosis or kyphosis), posture and deformities in the body, and various degrees of weakness in the feet and legs, especially during the growth period. For this reason, chronic low back pain observed in children should be taken seriously and the cause should be investigated by consulting a physician, as it may be a sign of a serious disease." Yılmaz stated that this condition can cause short stature, poor aesthetic appearance, narrowing of lung capacity, arthritis, lower back pain and psychological problems. He concluded:

"This condition can be seen, for example, in spastic children or those who had a stroke in childhood. However, frequently encountered cases Scoliosis, which occurs mostly in the 10s and is seen in a group whose cause is still unknown, and congenital scoliosis, which occurs due to factors exposed to during pregnancy (infections, diabetes and some vitamin deficiencies) and shows symptoms from birth. While scoliosis can cause aesthetic defects, curvatures in the rib section can negatively affect the functions of the heart and lungs.

Spine disorders, especially scoliosis, can be easily detected with a back examination during adolescence. It is essential that scoliosis is detected early and referred to a physical therapy and rehabilitation clinic or hospital where scoliosis will be monitored. Some types of scoliosis can be treated without surgery if detected before it progresses. Avoiding fast food-style diets and adopting healthy eating habits or teaching them to your child will contribute to the reduction of waist and back pain. In order to prevent children's health problems related to their waist and back, parents should follow the ideal posture and movement rules.
